Hey guys. Posting here looking for find some answers. I have a 2018 trd offroad 6 ft bed with a four wheel csmper fleet on the back. I added 2" spacer lift to the front and bilstein 5100s with old man emu heavy duty leaf springs and adding airbags with daystar cradles in the back this week for a 2 inch lift total. Have 33" wildpeak at3w tires.

Driving through s curves at about 30 or so mph all of a sudden my left front tire will have a braking sensation like a grind. Is this my vcs or abs system kicking in? It only lasts a few seconds. Is it due to the payload increase with having the camper always on?

I called my local Toyota and they are trying to charge me $2500 for a VCS recalibration! Yikes.

Any ideas on what's going on and how to fix it? Thanks!

I’m not understanding “braking sensation like a grind”.

The truck all of a sudden begins braking in just the left front for a few seconds then stops. It sounds like a forced deep crunch/grind similar to losing traction in 4wd kind of noise or feel. Hope that helps.

It doesn't matter if I'm turning left or right through curves etc. It did happen once at a stop sign turning right in the same area too.

Does it sound like the same noise as "Crawl Control"? like the ABS pump is spazzing and clunking?

I haven't used crawl control so I'm not fully sure. Sorry for that. It sounds and is similar to losing traction briefly but the system is braking the left front tire only. Everything was professionally installed and I trusted their work. Wondering if I need another toyota dealership, the guys were confused on vcs recalibration.

Found some similar posts to people with campers on 2nd gens with these symptoms and they reset their calibration and it was gone

    $2500 lol

    theyre trying to rob you

edit, i guess the thread doesnt exactly answer your question.
Whats happening is your VSC is kicking in because your truck is higher and heavier, resulting in more sway and/or not what the truck thinks is normal positioning, through the turns. Your truck thinks its tipping/sliding/whatevering and is kicking on the ABS traction control system.

Are any of the traction control indicators on the dash flashing?

Is it more of a tat-tat-tat sound rather than a grinding sound?

How do you know it’s affecting only one wheel?

Motofox, dude yes. They called me at the end of the day and I just laughed lol.

Do you know if that thread works for 3rd gen? The first step is turn the ignition. I have push button. So I'm guessing just put it in accessory mode? Lol

    Thanks for the link

Mine used to do weird stuff vsc after my lift. Probably needs a zero point calibration for the steering angle sensor it’s like $100 or you can do it yourself with a multimeter and some patience.

I am unsure how/if that method will work for 3rd gens. I just googled a little bit and found this with the 2nd post containing a snippit from the Toyota FM

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/vsc-zero-point-recalibration-on-3rd-gen-tacoma.557025/

edit/add I thought i remember reading some local guy had his local dealership for it for $250

maybe your service writer miss-read a decimal or something lol

call them back and ask why is it TWENTY FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS for a tech to plug his computer into your OBD port and click a few things when it should just be an hour of labor... for a job that will take 10 minutes (or maybe im just ignorant)

There a post https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ibrate-your-vsc-computer-the-easy-way.467485/ where they explain how to reset/calibrate the VCS computer. It's for 2nd gen but i think that still work for the 3rd.

If you lift the truck you lift the plane where the Gyro or accelerometer take his measurement. I have make many thing with gyroscope or accelerometer IC and i think what's happen here is when you lift the truck you amplifiy the reaction, like a lever when you lift something. The swing the sensor see move faster than is realy is because of the offset on the calibration vs the X-Y-Z axis when the truck move.

I saw many people reseting the VSC and this helped the over-reaction of the system.

I've had this happen a few times with the Northstar camper on the back. It's definitely the traction control detecting unexpected forces due to the top-heavy camper. It's only happened a few times, but it scared the crap out of me. As you've probably determined, hold on and steer straight, it eventually goes away. This usually happens on off-camber downhill sweeping turns with a decreasing radius. I'm happy to report the truck doesn't act this way on every trip, and it may have recalibrated itself. . On our last trip to Yosemite and back, it didn't happen once. No VSC reset on my truck. :notsure: it's a 2019, so we pratically have the same model. I did re-gear, updated the TSB flash, and went to KDMax tune FWIW. I also have the Dobinsons MRA adjustable coilovers, so that may make a difference. :bored:

Awesome. Thanks everyone for the info. Ryan, glad you have experienced this too! It totally scared the crap out of me. Mine must be added forces in curves. I don't experience it going downhill just flat oddly enough.

I'm sure it happened when you were up to speed, at 50 mph+?

Ryandclb, no at slower speeds through s curves and once from a 4 way stop turning right

    Sounds like zero point calibration.

After a bunch of phone calls found a dealership in Eugene Oregon for $160. Much better price! They lay tape on the floor, hook up to the obd port, and calibrate it electronically through a computer system. Not many dealerships do it often I've found which is the hardest part, no one really knows what it is until you find "the guy"
