Yes, those systems are aftermarket installs. I thought you were saying the technology's existence was suspect. To my knowledge there is nothing with that capability that comes OEM on these trucks.

If you want to disable this stupidity entirely then just pull the appropriate fuses and if you want to take it an extra step further and there is a separate module for the setup entirely then pull that as well. Your truck is no longer capable of being tracked or remotely shut down by whoever gives that order (usually the law).

This is a Jeep and an older video but there was an update about 3 years ago saying the issue hadn't been corrected because manufacturers just don't see it as a widespread threat. They state in the video that multiple manufacturers are susceptible to this, these particular guys have just messed with the Jeep software most.

A shop I used to go to had a customer drop their vehicle off via tow truck because it wouldn't start. He spent two days messing with it before the dealership showed up and disabled the immobilizer that they'd activated due to nonpayment. Dealership repo'd the car from his shop and he never got paid for his 2 days.

    Yep

Onstar has been capable of remote shutdown going back to the 2000s. People pretending the capability is not out there on vehicle's factory installed systems have their head in the dirt.

^Clueless about the capabilities of these factory systems that have been standard options going back to the 2000s on many cars.

Its just that Toyota has finally gotten into the game too...later as usual.

Ok, last comment, I promise. The crowd is clearly not familiar with all the things that Toyota Remote Connect can do from your phone or smart watch. Here is a sample:

    - Get alerts sent to the primary account owner related to exceeding preset limits of speed, curfew or miles driven.
    - Check the status of your Toyota vehicle's doors, windows, odometer and fuel level.
    - Locate your vehicle
    - Start the vehicle remotely using your compatible smart device (it can also turn it off).
    - Your car is also connected to Google, via Alexa. This is made possible by using the Alexa "Skill" named Toyota for Alexa devices or the Google "action" named Toyota for Google Assistant™ enabled devices.

    https://www.toyota.com/connected-services/remoteconnect/

    I
f you don’t think that a person with administrative access (or a clever hacker) could do anything they want without your knowledge or consent, you haven’t been paying attention.

Are you the same guy who claimed that Jeeps could not be remotely killed when that service came out....until they did?

    Like I said, clueless.

Tinfoil hat, I think it's because they want in five years to send the kill signal to your laundry set so the board self destructs right out side of warranty and you'll buy a new pair.

If you're worried about tech / spy shit in a new vehicle you'd be better off buying an old square body chevy

I remember learning about this in my smog certification courses some 10 years ago. OBD3 has been around for quite some time now. It still has the communication technologies of OBD2, but the wireless command capabilities of it makes it a 3rd generation OBD, absolutely.

As a matter of fact I remember hearing a story from a guy at a Pontiac dealer at the time who was telling me that one of their brand new at the time G8 GTs (with OnStar obviously) got stolen right off the lot and had to be labeled a salvage car on the title thereafter and sold at an auction because of it. He told me the only way they caught the guy who stole it was by pinging a kill command to the car otherwise they wouldn't have recovered it until it may have been too late. I guess they found it some few miles down on the freeway. So yeah the tech is definitely out there and Toyota has long been in bed with Chevy easily since the '90s so whoever says that a Toyota is now not capable of any sort of external hacking to make it do what that end user wants it to do is entirely uneducated at this point.

As well as the "you shouldn't care if you have nothing to hide" argument. They just keep taking an inch at a time. People continue to allow it out of convenience or safety.

The new washer & dryers already commonly crap out in 5-8 years and require costly repairs. Cheap plastic parts + the unneeded additional of digital controls.

Speed Queen makes pair with mechanical dials that's heavy duty. It's not sexy so your typical bumble fuck has to have bluetooth and an app to let them know when their laundry is done

I am still waiting for an example of a toyota remote deactivated or hacked. C'mon guys, it is the most popular car company globally, there must be many examples of Toyotas being remotely deactivated since it is such a massive security backdoor.

I dont care about Jeeps, they are poorly designed, so their wireless systems are also poorly designed. Remote deactivation of jeeps resulted from poorly written software and the issue was fixed after a recall (similar to any other thing Chrysler puts out). So there wasn't something inherently unsafe, it was poor design. If you put a crappy lock on the car, people will also be able to break into the car.

Btw, since y'all are so worried about being tracked. How can you trust toyota really stopped tracking you? They say they stopped service, maybe they did not. Maybe there are additional systems that transmit the data that cannot be disabled even with pulling fuses off. The trucks computer has a data recorder, each time you go to the dealer they connect the computer to Toyota servers to check for updates etc., are you sure the computer just doesn't upload all the data it collected (which basicly is a lump sum of what it would otherwise transmit). What about smog tests, what makes you think the government can also not download the same data of the computer.

If you buy alcohol, tobacco, or anything else that's not good for your health and you pay with a credit or debit card, I am betting your health insurance company knows about it! They know and track our every move now. Moral of this story is fund your bad habits with cash.
