    Hello,

Apparently Toyota cut corners on the 2018 Tacoma and stopped putting the shelf in the glove box. The 2016 and 2017 had a partial shelf to hold owners manuals.

I have posted pictures of a 3 piece prototype that will organize the whole glove box. Looking for feedback to see if that is what members want. This will fit back to 2016 if the OEM shelf is removed. The prototype slides in and out easy to get access to the cabin air filter.

Thanks @abaxter41 for letting me know Toyota dropped the ball on the 2018!

    Awesome! You make quick work!

Couldn’t help but notice the manuals are not in the sleeve. Looks like there should be room to fit the full sleeve with manuals inside, but are you able to confirm?

Only other thing I can think of would be having a small lip on the edge of the top piece to keep things from rolling out when the glove box is open. Might not be feasible, but might as well ask.

Wow that’s crazy. They stopped putting in the partial shelf.

Ya, after finding out the 2016 and 2017 had a factory shelf I thought mine got lost or something so I called the dealer. Guy that answered went out and checked the other 2018s on the lot and nada.

I’ve seen some comments on Tacomaworld of people not liking the shelf and taking it out but surprising they just stopped shipping them entirely. The ledges are still there which make it look like it was designed for a shelf.

I believe each dealer has their own pouch, sleeve, notebook, etc. for the manuals. I left an inch on each side of the actual manuals thinking that was enough. My Tacoma manuals are in a vinyl pouch from the dealer and it is fine. Not sure what other dealers are doing. That is the great thing about TW, I can get a sanity check before I pull the trigger on parts.

Sounds good. The picture definitely looks like there should be room but figured I’d check.

    Where do I order?

Unless the focus groups said take it out, which is probably what happened.

They sell 16K of Tacomas a month. We have a few hundred in the 3rd gen section who post. Toyota has many focus groups that represent the vast majority of Tacoma buyers. We at Tacomaworld are definitely not the average buyer!

My bet is regular customers wanted it removed.

It's a thing. I've been part of more than a few of them haha. One for Honda! One for Chevy. And Toyota. They call them different titles but basically they are a diverse group of potential owners. It's been a few years though. Pretty sure my 50+ age takes me out of certain demographics.

Think for a minute: How much would it cost Toyota just to change the assembly drawings and bill of materials for removing the glove box partition? Also the manufacturing process for installation? That alone would cost more than they would save in material cost for the partition. Yep, pretty sure it was customer driven.
The good news is it allows companies like Salex to step in and offer aftermarket solutions for those who want a partition!
Personally, I just stuff crap in there til it's full. No OCD in my life haha.

I was in a Honda focus group in the 90s. For many years in the 80s/90s, I owned all kinds of Acuras and Hondas. They'd get about 50 to 100 of us together and test drive various new/existing cars. The interesting thing is that you would have to drive ALL the other manufacturers' models of the same segment. You'd drive the Accord, then drive the Camry, the Taurus etc. After each iteration you would fill out various questionnaires reference ride handling (of each model), power, comfort, seating, noise level..... blah, blah, blah.

Well... if they're anything like the other manufacturers, then they already had the drawings and work packages "open" for each new model year. Which would make it very simple to do a 'temporary' change to thw drawing when they cut in the change - and incorporate it for realsies the next year. And then, work packages tend to be living documents that can be updated easily each time an opportunity/efficiency is realized.

So... Probably cost well under $10k, and realizing that most of that may have been sunk cost for some other change before that point... It might be free as an add-on.

If they werw actually changing the stuff for customer feedback... the ledge would be gone and you'd have a light in there.

I have a 2016 with the OEM shelf and I would still buy the new one. More sections to keep everything organized; looks good to me.

I use the shelf in my ‘16 but it’s not quite right size for some maps, you know those old fashioned paper things. Personally, I find the trend to near phonebook sized manual sets, with vinyl binders that take up another couple cubic inches, annoying. Or at least create a dedicated slot somewhere in that huge dash or console, or under the seat, to tuck it away, so we can put gloves in our glove boxes!

I think for many of us the OEM shelves in the 16 made a lot of noise and was annoying.
