When you say property tax, are you saying that you pay your house taxes along with your car registration? if it is that way is not bad... if I add both I would be paying around 5k......

In South Dakota, paid about $100 for year including upgrade for veteran plate. Looks like I’m getting a bargain compared to most other places.

I would reconsider your living options. My wife and I left CA two years ago. Best decision we ever made.

It depends on when you bought it in GA. Under the old system you paid sales tax (7%) to the dealer when you purchased the vehicle. The dealer paid the tax to your local tax office. Then yearly (on your birthday) you paid ad valorem tax + a $20 tag fee. The tax is based on the vehicles value and it drops a little each year. I paid about $170 on my 2007 Tacoma in February to get a new tag.

But they changed the law 8-9 years ago. If you buy from an individual who does not collect sales tax you pay 7 1/2% of the vehicles value + $20 tag fee when you pick up the new tag. And you pay what they say it is worth. If dad sells you a car for $500 and the tag office says it is worth $5000, you pay tax on the $5000.

If I buy from a dealer they can still collect 7.5% tax and even roll it into the loan. Plus I only pay tax on the difference if I trade in. If I buy a $40,000 truck and they give me $15,000 in trade I pay tax on $25,000, not the full $40,000. Then each year on my birthday I only pay the $20 fee for a new tag.

Since I bought my Tacoma under the old system I pay tax yearly. Same with my Honda and our camper. But I have an F150 bought in 2016 and my utility trailer which only cost me $20/year since they were bought under the new system.

I really like the new system better. You pay 1/2% more up front, but that is it. No more tax on the vehicle, just a $20 fee every year to cover the costs of the new tag. I could sell my Tacoma to my wife and just pay the 7 1/2 % one time and then only pay $20/year on it. But when you do the math I'd have to keep the truck 7 more years to break even. I may well still have it, but who knows.

    Lots, straight from the factory.
When I lived in Washington state it was $63 per vehicle, didn’t matter the value of the vehicle.
*Edited to add: I didn’t live in King County, so I didn’t get ass raped by the monorail or light rail tax that those unfortunate souls have to pay.

Here in good ole Arizona, the truck was about $550, wife’s car is about $450.

I wonder about a lot of things....but never anything like this ^^^^ I'm blaming the mental strain of sheltering in place.

I would gleefully pay $1000 a year car property tax if that meant my house property tax was only 3x what you pay ($1950)

I pay $2600 a year property tax and I believe $180 for my truck for 2 years. My Harley is $49 a year. Of course that's Canadian too lol
