Yes, this. Read the fine print. Closely. This is how you avoid being taken advantage of. So many people don't for some reason. They just don't seem to care about money added in on the financed loan amount.

10k mile OCI. That's 20k a year. That would more than satisfy most people's driving habits.

What's a decent synthetic oil change cost these days? I know my neighbor often pays $75+ on his Camry when he takes it in. I'm a DIYer so I really don't know. But at 2 OCs a year it doesn't sound like a bad price, really

Glad to see I'm not the only one here who changes oil more often than the 10k mile recommendation.

Since we’re rolling on service and dealers....

I took mine in today to replace the outer window trim on my passenger rear window. There’s two little overlap sections that I think help with waterproofing. One of mine was broken. No biggie. So they ordered the part and called me in. I sat in the lobby for the required 2 hours and get the call.

“Well we’ve got the part all replaced and I have your truck ready to go. I have some bummer news though, they replaced the wrong part. It wasn’t broken but they replaced it anyways so you now have a new widget. The service writer before ordered the wrong part and they just put that on. I’ve made sure to order the right part and it should be here Tuesday.”

What can you do? It doesn’t do any good to blow up. So I hop in the truck and head home. When I get home and unload a big yard pinwheel I bought on the way home, I notice the door cover behind the glass on the inside is flopping all over the place. Damn, they must have popped that off to replace the wrong part. I’ll snap it back on. Damn, they lost or broke the three white body clips so that’s a no go.

I call service and he says he’ll order some clips. I said ‘don’t you have those in stock?’ I’ll come by and pick up a few.

So, going to be three trips to replace this silly molding. Oh well, at least it’s free. Sort of.

Time to start looking for a good indi here on the west side of DFW. I just turned 36k. For the record, it’s been pretty darn trouble free.

I do every 5k myself. Oil is black at 5k, i know it may not mean much but it makes me sleep better at night. Ive always been like that on all of my vehicles.

My record is 6 trips at a total of 25 hours of my time for a mechanical seal leak on a 2AR-FE RAV4 water pump.

First visit they claimed nothing was wrong and the loss of coolant is normal, then neglected to even top off the coolant reserve that was bone dry. Second trip they neglected to order the pump I asked to be ordered ahead of time, but at least they acknowledged the leak. Third trip they had the pump but said it was an engine out service, which I didn't have time to spend that day; I later learned that was BS. Fourth trip they replaced the pump in all of 2 hours; it was leaking on the ground when I got home. Fifth trip they didn't have the gasket that I again asked to be ordered ahead of time, just gave me a bottle of coolant. Sixth trip they finally got it right. I still have the voucher they gave me for 2 free oil changes for my time, like I was ever going back there again. They also refused to just give me the materials to do those two oil changes myself.

It was warranty otherwise I would have done it myself. Now I'm selective if I even go back for warranty work; the free oil changes are definite no.

Toyota built the truck. They know what is good for the engine. Modern synthetic oil too? Do as you please obviously, but you are just flushing your money down the toilet. Regular driving habits = 10k or 1 year, whichever comes first.

Yessir. I was always taught to change every 3k with conventional. Since I drive a lot, I switched to synthetic and pushed it to 5k when I saw the claims of 5-7k. Now some claim 15k miles (or 10k in Toyota's case). My oil is definitely black at 5k. Classic case of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Oil is cheap maintenance! No reason to skimp.

I drive a lot. I was always taught to change it every 3k miles (with conventional) but knew I could push it to 5-7k with synthetic. But 10-15k as some of these claim? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It's cheap maintenance and I can tell you, my oil at 5k can get pretty dark.

A tip of the hat to places that sell motor oil/etc. to people who know what happens whenever they do business with a car dealer for oil service and just about anything else the dealer is peddling.

To be fair, it will last the lifetime of the transmission. :)

    ^^ Internet humor.

My Camry is sealed. I did a full flush @ 75K miles and it looked like dog shit.
I live in the mountains. With my driving habits, no matter the vehicle, by the time I pull in the driveway you can smell the work the engine and tranny have been doing. Anyone that's riding with me for the first time upon exiting the vehicle, always remarks "something smells like it's overheating."

5K oil changes for me, and I'll probably flush the truck transmission @ 50 -65K.
