    I didn't read all the posts...but I have a weird and/or stupid question.

Not all of the smart phones have wifi capability. My husband discovered this 6 months ago... (blackberry), although....it doesn't really matter anyway.

Say for instance, you get a smart phone (that has wifi capability) and data plan..... but you discover you don't use it for data/online as much as you would've liked. Can you delete the data plan but still use the phone to surf the net, get e-mail, via wifi where there's access?? or doesn't Verizon allow you to drop the data plan?

(I think AT&T you can have an iphone and drop the data service)

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think you can downgrade your plan but not get rid of the data plan completely. i have unlimited data on my droid, but my gf has some samsung phone. its kind of a smart phone but not all the way. anyway, they require all phones that can be considered a smart phone to have a 10 dollar a month data plan. i dont remember how much data it is (200 mb maybe?). but if you have a "smartish" type phone of VZ you have to have a data plan of some kind

On Verizon, a smartphone must have a data plan. No way around it from what I know. The cheapest data plan for Verizon is $29 per month. So no, you cannot have a smartphone on Verizon with no data plan.

On the unlimited data plan the "limit" is 5GB per month. But you can go over that if you steam Pandora or Slacker daily and that's ok because those apps are on the Android market. I have actually called verizon regarding the issue and they said that it is not a problem. In fact, my friend has a Droid and regularly does 10-14GB per month with not additional charges. I think where the "limit" comes into affect is when you tether using PDAnet, which from what I hear, Verizon can tell a difference between regular phone use and tethering to a computer. I don't know if that is true either because my friend that has the Droid uses PDAnet everyday for his regular internet at home and he has had the Droid since it came out and has never been charged.

Not for the real smart phones. You can get a "3G Multimedia Smart phone" for $10 per month, but that's not a real smart phone. None of the "multimedia phones" have a OS and no access to the Android, WM or Palm app market. You can get some cheesy Verizon apps for like $5 a pop which are nothing like the real smartphone apps. Yes, you can get on the internet, but not with a real HTML browser and the experiance is horrible. I know because I use to have one of these phones and it is well worth the extra $20 per month for the real deal. If you want a Android, Windows Mobile or Palm OS phone you must have a $29.99 data plan.

my bro and sis both have the eris on VZ and they each have the $10 plan. i assume that is not considered a smart phone. but they can still search the internet like i can and use the android market. they have the android version 2. something (cant remember the exact version.)

The Eris is a smartphone, but I question the $10 data plan. http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Android-Devices/Data-Plan-for-Droid-ERIS/td-p/126131

    http://gizmodo.com/5074915/verizon-forces-30-minimum-data-plans-on-new-smartphones

    http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Ver...plans-for-new-smartphones-article-a_3404.html

    Maybe it's this..

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/verizons-v-cast-video-for-android-now-available-runs-10-a-mon/

I just called Verizon because I'm getting my wife a smartphone in about two weeks to ask is there anyway to have a smartphone on Verizon with anything less that the $29 data plan, she said no. All smartphones require the minimum $29 data plan. If the $10 per month was true that would be great because I use about 1 gb per month.

hmmm.... i dont know then. they are still in school so my mom pays for their phones and i remember her asking me about data plans. she refused to pay the $30 a month plan, but mentioned the $10 plan. is there a way to share data plans? cause i know for a fact she isn't paying the $30 per phone but i dunno what other options are available. i'll have to ask her cause now i'm curious.
