Seems like posting in your region would be better odds of a good reply.

Not sure what the Vermont loophole is, or why it's age related, but I'm pretty sure your insurance company will want to know the legit place where the vehicle is housed.

I have heard of people doing that with mostly trailers, there are even websites where you can do everything with a click of the mouse. But for cars I thought it was a different story, especially it you get caught.
1 reason is if your living in NY for a period of time your a resident and all residents are required to register there vehicle in NY. The best thing to do is move.

Didn’t you do this to get your shitbox registered while avoiding California DMV fees?

I’ve done it. But this isn’t really a permanent way to avoid your state’s DMV. It’s a stepping stone for vehicles that don’t have titles. You’re going to have a hard time insuring it if you keep it in VT.

I don’t recommend it for what you’re trying to do.

South Dakota is another one. You don't even have to go there to register your vehicle.
There are loads of reasons to not do this though.

I went to Connecticut for vacation back in 2015 and met a guy at a car show who had a 1993 Chevy S10 with a blown 502 in it; The title wasn’t the issue, but rather that it wouldn’t pass emissions in Connecticut and was too new to be registered as an antique. Using a loophole, he registered it in Maine with plans to get CT antique tags on it once it was 25 years old (Considering that it’s now 28 years old, I’d imagine he’s done this by now).

Pennsylvania gives you the option of once a year or every two years; I forget what the 1-year registration costs, but I believe it was just under $140 to register my truck for two years. State inspection and emissions is done yearly and my mechanic charges just under $50 for it.

I do the South Dakota thing BUT I also have a Baja Sur California, Mexico operators permit. If your local LEO stops you with and out of state plate and an in state operators permit, they will ticket you. Me, I show them my Baja DL and tell them that I am just up here for a few weeks until I go back south. I live in CA and CA is going broke, fast, and they are looking for anything to generate revenue... they will pay people to snitch on you to the CA DMV.

VT doesn't issue titles for vehicles 15 years or older, therefore the 2004 Tacoma I purchased and registered in 2019 doesn't have a title issued by the state. Still gotta pay the tax on the vehicle when you initially register it (6% of NADA value or the sale price, whichever is greater), but I was able to skip the title transfer and VIN verification stuff.

I'm not a lawyer and can't speak on whether OP can register it in VT or not without running afoul with his local branch of the "finest" NY State Police and/or his insurance company. That said, I have a fair few friends who had mismatched states between their car and operator's license at one point or another and it was never an issue- they were just moving in or out of the state and never bothered to change the thing until it expired and then switched accordingly.
