I was thinking. It would be nice to have a cap to go camping in but most of the time I need an open bed for hauling stuff. It would be neat if someone were to make a vertical bed extender, two side walls, a back wall and some sort of hatch for the rear, then put the tonneau cover of choice on top (something I already have). It would be easy to install and lightweight and easy to remove when needed.

Sounds like you are describing exactly what a Softopper accomplishes lol

I ran one for a long time for these exact reasons.

@MESO would need to buy a much larger 3D printer.

I haven't seen that setup. Other than on old trucks that fabbed it up with plywood. Would be a neat idea.

The OP would like to stand up and load the truck with high bed sides. I don't think a soft top is what he is talking about. A soft top is first, soft, he would like hard sides and 2nd it has a roof, which he would not like to have.

Pretty sure, a soft top is exactly what he doesn't want.

I've seen something like this on a Hilux when I was in Brisbane, AUS. I thought it was pretty cool.

I guess the sides could be as tall or as short as you like. I just thought tonneau cover because I already have one but there a lot of choises out there. I suppose you could even put a real cap on top for extra height if you needed it. Maybe I am thinking of a soft topper but I like the idea of hard walls and should be inexpensive. You know, maybe I'll just try and gin one up out of 80/20.

I'm pretty sure there are mechanisms that can lift a cap a foot or two above the bed... I just can't remember what they're called. Someone will probably link to it before I finish typing this.

    1) cap for camping
    2) lightweight
    3) easy to remove

Sure sounds like a softopper to me. Nothing exists (that is readily available) that is EXACTLY what he is describing. Was just trying to throw a possible solution out there...

Maybe build something along the lines of what the old farm trucks used to rock!93304_Front_3-4_Web-e1450812811253.jpg

There we go, maybe a little more closed in and maybe a little more integrated with a Taco. I remember PU truck beds use to have holes in the top edge just for sticking a 2x3's so as to build up the walls kind of like that pic..

Build the sidewalls from plywood and 2X4s, and rig a roll-up Tonneau cover to go on top.
