The 2nd gen had even less competition than the 3rd gen when it was just the frontier as the only other option.
Now there are currently 5 options in the market.
At the end of the day it's just a truck. If you don't like it don't buy it. I don't care which truck is the sales leader or how many trucks are sold every month. More trucks means more on the used car market and more people having buyers remorse.
In fact most buyers that have buyers remorse trade their vehicle in the first year after buying. That's why most of the used cars on a car lot are late model cars that are only 1-2 years old.

That's what the 1st gen guys told the 2nd gen guys. Actually there are very few with problems. They just like to post a lot and guys like me with no issues just enjoy our trucks instead of whining about in countless times on an internet forum.

Chuckle.... Hard to call them competition, IMHO! Now when Ford gets their act together and reintroduces the Ranger, that will be competition. Supposedly in 2019, we'll see it. I hope they have a manual option. Ford seems to get it about manuals. For example, my "midlife crisis" is a GT350. It doesn't have an automatic option. Six speed manual is all you can get.

It would be great if they put the 2.7 ecoboost in it but I doubt it will put the same horsepower and torque the f150 model will put out because ford doesn't want to cut into their f150 sales and risk losing the reputation of the best selling vehicle in America.

Lol if you are worried about recalls then you should take a bus. At least Toyota owns up to their mistakes unlike the big 3 bahahahahaa

Easy, make it an F100 Ranger. Then it doesn't cut into the F-Series sales, but rather adds to it.

Either way, though, I don't care how much power the Ranger's ecoboost has if it looks anything like the current Ranger looks. lol

I love my OR MT, BUT, the reverse gear ratio is terrible, so keep that in mind when towing. If you have a slight grade you are trying to back up, you end up having to slip the clutch more than you think you would. Tends to lead to a minor burning smell if you aren't careful! I haven't had any of the other problems that get brought up frequently though. I have been lucky so far!

I'm not sure what's up with all the "feminine" body styles that some mid size trucks are getting. They look kind of minivan/crossoverish up front. The current Hilux, Ridgeline and Ranger. Even the GMs, but not as bad as the others. The Tacoma looks like a truck should look (IMO). Even if it's outperformed by others, I don't think I'd switch. I don't want to drive a minivan with a truck bed.

Yep, I don't understand the styling thinking on the other current mid-size truck. Like with the Colorado, why didn't GM just make it look exactly like a slightly smaller Silverado?

Same goes for the new Ranger...just make it look exactly like a slightly smaller F150.

Just like how the Tacoma looks like a smaller Tundra, the style on mid-side counterparts shouldn't be rocket science...

I've had both still happy with the 3rd gen and I'm a dealership service tech (mopar) .. I think the real problem is the drive by wire throttle response.. mine is lifted with 285/75/16 .. I bought a 2015 wrx limited it had the same issue the pedal made no difference between 25%-60%. I think it's to help with over reaction to aid fuel economy..

I find it humorous to see people that don’t even own a third gen, mostly second gen owners, tell you how much it sucks simply because of what they read on here. How about this, if you’re serious about buying the truck, some dealers will let you drive it over a day or two. Do this before you make sure your decision rather than a 5-mile drive.

I purchased my third gen in January ‘16 and have yet to have any issues with the transmission, CPS or rear diff leak. I do trail rides and use it for what it’s meant to be.

Or let just let the truck do its thing and focus on staying on the road.

I spent 3 months shopping, doing a bunch of test drives in a lot of different trucks before I decided. No reason you settle on the feeling after only one.

Find a dealership that will let you rent one for a few days. Buying any vehicle on a 10-30 minute test drive is crazy.

Normal for the vehicle. Do not buy it thinking it will change or improve because it will not. If you don't like it on the test drive, you won't like it any more one or two years later. I've had mine for 26k miles and coming up on 2 years. No change in fuel economy, no change in driving behavior.

If you don't need a bed buy a 4 Runner. Much more refined.
