I did that from the get go. That little notch in the cable just seems like it's in the perfect spot.

I didn't have any prior Tacoma experience until I bought my 17 DCOR automatic 2 weeks ago. To make matters even worse, I came from driving a Duramax for the past 11 years! I will be honest though.... upon driving home from the dealership and having to get in the pedal to maintain speed on slight hills. I immediately came home and popped the hood because I thought the sales guy pulled a fast one on me and sold me a 4 banger! I will admit though that the shifting and lugging has gotten a lot better. I feel like Toyota was really trying to optimize the trans for fuel mileage, but with an engine light on torque like the 3.5 is the sweet spots don't match up. If I were a power train engineer for Toyota all Tacoma's would have straight-six's in them!

If we are doing true confessions here I almost backed into people on two occasions with my old porsche's 6 speed manual transmission. You get a little too exhuberant putting it into 1st and surprise...your in reverse.

Both of my 6 Speed Tacoma's you really have to shove it past the gate to get over towards reverse and then the Truck Beeps and the reverse camera comes on, there is just no way to mistake 1st and Reverse.

I know a guy who took his 4Runner with alot more miles, back to the dealer for a Tundra without taking a bath on the trade in. If you are really unhappy, might talk to the dealer.

Ohh I miss my straight six I had in my old Cherokee sport. My first 4x4, probably the most disgusting vehicle I owned as it had more water inside than out when it rained.

just got r this morning when wanting 1st. It is easy to do, they did not mistake proof this. That being said, yes it beeped and yes the camera comes on, but if you are focussed on the busyness around you, radio a little loud, or even in a hurry, it can and will happen.

They must have loosened up on 3rd gens a little, in both of my 2nd gens you kinda have to give it a good shove to get over.

In a similar boat but I'm never getting rid of my 01 taco I will probably keep it forever. In my opinion it's one of the best trucks Toyota ever made besides a 85 efi but yea. I love my new truck it just drives and has no issues but it does have a lack of torque but all vehicles newer vehicles don't have torque these days it does suck I have to put it in low range if I wanna back up my driveway outherwise the clutch stinks. I'm a manual trans guy I hate autos my dad always had manuals so I never even considered an auto. It's near impossible to compare the 1st gen to the 3rd gen. Both r amazing in here own ways. The 01 just never fails and the lady's really like the 16 but the real lady's always like the 01 more. I had said years back I would never buy a new truck yada yada but when it was released I wanted a trouble free new rig so I could get the old dog back up to mint condition. I do hate the lack of throttle response I feel the throttle body opens very slowly and it doesn't start ripping till 3500 rpm. U can't just stab it like the 1st gen. Can't come into a turn down shift into second and punch it and squeal through the turn. And I feel the reverse detent is plenty strong enough to keep me from accidentally selecting it. And the r150 detent shift rail system doesn't allow u to select reverse with out coming from first or second. And I just got my seat rebuilt and had bought a new seat trim panel in the 01 it was like 93$ It was real hard to buy I watched it on eBay for months before I finally bit the bullet. Just add a washer to the mounting screw and get some sort of side steps or sliders and don't slide over it all the time and it should last a while.

Who doesn't test drive a new car? Even if you've actually driven the same model I'd still want to drive the exact car I'm purchasing.

Sometimes it is not possible, no 6 speed manuals within 250 miles, best you can do is drive the automatic.

My wife even test drove the Taco despite how little she will drive it and put it through its paces before we decided.

If you're maneuvering your truck a lot, (i.e. parking lot or backing a trailer in a small space) reverse next to 1st gear saves swinging the shiftier all the way across the other gears... European cars and big trucks have been like this for years.
