i noticed on my way into work today that at lower speeds there is a very very noticeable clacking sound coming from somewhere under my truck. It also changes with speed. At first i thought maybe a front axle was bad, but when i applied the brakes the sound went away. I couldnt feel anything in the pedal either. So now i am thinking it is something brake related on one of the wheels. i'm going to jack up the truck and check all 4 corners tomorrow and rotate the wheels to see if i can hear or feel anything. Can anyone think of anything specifically i should look for besides something obviously rubbing on something that rotates?

other than the noise, the truck drives perfect.

Not sure if its the same but on my old gen1 had a weird sound coming from wheels.
Turned out one of the front brake caliper pistons was rusted and stuck so it was rubbing on disk.
Sound went away when I steped on brake, I used some lithium on cal piston and it cleared up.

Does it happen when stopped, foot on brake and you shift into reverse?

My first thought was the old motor mount / frame failure. Causes the fan to rub on the shroud.
Happens a lot with '05 and early '06 tacomas that did not have reinforcements on the frame.

no only while in motion. got it figured out. i think my rear brake shoes are starting to disintegrate. when i rotated the rear wheels individually you could hear the clacking sound, and as soon as i applied the brakes to start slowing them down, the sound disappeared. i guess it's time they fell apart, as far as i know there are 145K miles on them.

that and a combination of a bad sway bar link.
