I prefer to keep a low profile myself. No need of attracting unwanted attention with a veteran plate on my truck.

I don't use mine for ID to get out of a ticket or anything, I like knowing that i'm donating to the cause and can represent my service. I don't know about anybody else's states, but Oregon and Washington both use the plate fees to fund veterans affairs.

    For Washington state:

    Veteran Statistics
Number of Armed Forces Plates On the Road as of 9/1/17

    Air Force 3,288
    Army 6,364
    Coast Guard 893
    Marines 4,131
    National Guard 397
    Navy 4,025
    Total: 19,098

In Fiscal Year 2016, Armed Forces License Plates provided$477,429 for State Veterans Cemetery Operations.

I have veteran plates on my truck, but not to get free shit or get out of a ticket, mainly because I am proud of my service.

My wife surprised me with Veteran plates when it was time to re-register my truck. She found my DD-214 and everything. I have received a number of compliments, too.

I'd probably do it if they required a DD-214 in Utah, but anyone can get one. I do have the "Veteran" stamp on my DL, though, which does require proof of service.

I wish they did that in Washington.

What do you guys use for veteran ID status? I haven't seen anything that shows the status in case you ever need it. Or for when you want to get the aforementioned Home Depot discounts. lol

Im surprised that they wouldn't require a DD214 for veteran plates.

My Utah DL with the Vet stamp works at Lowe's. In fact, if you have a MyLowe's account you can enter your service info online and you'll get the discount every time you walk into the store, ID or not. I feel a little guilty about it but holy hell I drop a lot of coin in that store.

I've never tried it at Home Depot (or anywhere else for that matter).

The the extra fees go to charity, so I assume they're encouraging military parents, spouses, etc like to participate as well. But yes, any swinging dick can go get a USMC or whatever license plate in Utah.

Enlistment rates are also abysmally low here. Perhaps it's their way of showing support. I dunno, I'm not from this crazy place.

NH puts Veteran on your DL.
I also have my VA ID if needed, to prove I'm a Veteran kinda scary the VA has an expiration date.

Fuck you Washington. Not only were we last to get it, it just recently became available. Also, our license isn't good for air travel anymore. Ugh.

To whom outside of the VA do you have to "prove" you are a veteran to?

I dont mind showing my Id. Lots of stolen Valor that insignificant people try to make themselves look better by claiming to be veterans.

especially if you're dropping a lot of $$$ in there every year, saved quite a bit using mine. I usually ask when traveling and visiting attractions or staying in hotels. most let you book the govt/military rate even on personal travel and the difference can be significant. We can afford to pay full price but if they offer one, I'm taking it. If they don't not a big deal and that alone won't stop me from returning to a place.

I'm a Nam vet, for years never went to the veterans free meal then a few years ago my good friend Bob who is a WWII Vet and now cannot drive, I pick him up and we go each year on veterans day to applebees. I now have VA tag on my Tacoma. He wears his WWII hat and I wear my Toyota hat.
