Last military service in my family was WWII. Stories about "burning paper boats" floating down the shared "trench" latrine.

A friend has a daughter who serves ... and beats at least 1/2 the men on the obstacle course times! You go girl!

One day I was in Charleston SC at Patriot's Point ... a US submarine, USS Yorktown (the replacement after the first was sunk at Midway), destroyer USS Laffey which served from Normandy to April 1945. When I was boarding the Laffey it turned out one of the sailers who served on it was there. I of course thanked him immediately for his service. Then I followed his family through the ship (I tried to keep it discretely). There are several yellow ropes telling you where the general public cannot walk. He simply moved the rope saying "Hell, I served on this vessel. No one tells me I cannot go there!". He told stores about where sailors slept in the tropical heat, and about a kamikaze pilot whose plane ripped through the (seemed to me ...) strong armor of the front 5-inch gun turret. He said the pilot was clearly dead but had a smile on his face as if he was happiest in that moment of bombing the ship.
