VF tuner vs HP tuners for 2nd gen

Hi guys, I've done a good bit of research. I seen one of the major tuning companies here for the tacoma's use HP tuners instead of VF tuner on specifically the 2nd gen. Is there a reason?

I have no major mods i.e. supercharger. Though it's possible down the road. I'm currently looking mainly to get my 2nd gen's trans shift points straightened out. Either route I'd prefer to have the hardware to change tunes myself, and possibly just buy a tune pack from a vendor.
