I'm saving up to order this in the spring and definitely getting overwhelmed by the large thread.

I've tuned import cars before but never truck so I'm excited (and nervous) to join the community!

Hey, so this came up on the main thread, and I was curious what fields you change to switch to make a tune Prem or Reg octane. Gears, tire size, those are easy to find. I was about to take the 87 oct version of Mild/wild tonight and try to make some tweaks to the 1st and 2nd gear throttle map, since I have a theory I want to test out, and I've loved that tune so far. (no shit, best highway MPGs I've gotten in 4 years). I just so happen to have a tank of premium in the taco right now, so maybe I'll start with yours as the baseline?

It's not a fun process. I have to start with a Premium 2.0 tune or a known Premium tune. Then AJ (Mooseditty) gives me a copy of his Regular tune and tells me the changes that he has made. Then I load both tunes in VFtuner and begin copying the changes to the Premium file. Usually it's just changes to a tune that I already have in Premium, so It's not too much work.

I have gone through every map in VFtuner to find out how to just change a Regular tune to a Premium one, but there isn't any way that I know of to do it. The only way is to START with a known Premium tune.

I'm also running the Mild/Wild 3.1 Premium tune (started this week) and can already notice my MPG's are 1-2 better than before just using trip mileage (haven't filled up yet this week).

Thanks for that @PapaRee , very good to know. Applying known changes to a Prem tune VS hunting for Prem changes to a known tune def sounds easier. Is the 'compare' tool in VFTuner working yet? Or is it still bolding everything?

No, It's still the same. Not everything is bold, but some maps that are NOT different are still bold. When it is fixed and working properly, it will be nice to use for true comparisons.

I'm running the one you created for wiljayhi. I don't have enough miles on it to be a reliable source of info but initial impressions are very, very nice. Im not sure what version of yours you started with and added his extra requests, but all the talk about M+W in other ECUs would sure make me curious to give it a spin. Thanks for all you are giving back to the community. You should provide some Paypal info so those of us less technical can at least help keep you stocked with your favorite beverage in exchange for your time!

I’m all for tuning but how much more difference can you make on top of what Matt has already created?

I understand what you are saying, Matt did a good job on 2.0 final, but I think the idea is to have more flavors. Instead of just two options - a nice, solid performer like base and a sport version like performance, there are variations that these guys are coming up with that change things like shifting, towing, gas mileage, etc. You may like/want an improvement in gas mileage but could care less about towing. Matt struggled to please everyone, and now those who are happy with all but one facet of a tune can get that one thing changed to their liking.

Mat’s tunes are great. Think of his tunes like buying a nice suit. Using vF Tuner is like taking that suit to the tailor to make it fit exactly how you like.

Also, I think there are still opportunities to increase low end torque by modifying intake valve timing. But no one has taken the plunge yet to try and accomplish that.

There has to be something to gain somewhere on the low end. The tq curve graphs I have seen are atrocious below 4k or so. I assumed it was at least in large part due to fueling, possibly for emissions. I assume this has been ironed out thoroughly but what is the CL-OL logic on the stock tunes compared to many of these tunes you guys are making? Also, is there any detailed discussion about the ECU logic and programming for these truck goes as far as how it changes between CL and OL? I'd like to understand it well before I start playing around with stuff and my pervious experience is the Subaru Denso 32bit ECU of the 2006-2007 Impreza era. I have been holding onto an unused Innovate Motorsports WB O2 system, this would be a great time to put it to use.

I assume you are on the 04B31 calibration? Without giving it too much thought, I slapped the new TSB on my truck a couple weeks ago to get to 04B33. Now I have to wait for Mat to generate tunes or unlock it in vf and tweak it myself. That being said, it’s pretty damn good! Toyota has been copying Mats homework.

Appreciate the feedback. Funds would be greatly appreciated. Got A LOT of time and miles invested figuring this stuff out.

Really? I didn’t do the TSB because I’m on 5.29 with larger tires. Didn’t want to risk it.
