it depends at what load the pinging is happening.

depending on the load it could be the VVT ignition compensation tables adding in too much ignition for transient vvt movement, it could be too much static advance... etc

Is there ever a time that advancing your base intake timing would lower the chances of pinging or do you always have to retard the intake timing to benefit?

It's hard to say for sure. But advancing the cam in lower RPM has more benefits overall for sure.
*except* when you advance to full 75 degrees on the intake cam under 2000 RPM it can cause stuttering and misfiring.

Retarding the cam would be the answer to fixing it.

trying to read through and figure out but a little difficult lol. Im trying to find which variant might yield the best mileage for 04A61 with 35" tires and 5.29's. regular or premium, premium preferred. if it doesn't exist I can shoot money somebody's way to make it exist. any help appreciated thanks all

Would be sweet to try @PapaRee Kruiser 4.0 in this ECU ID and tune it for those tires and gears. I have 32’s and 4.88’s and it is very good on the mpgs once you adapt to the pedal travel and shifting schedule. I like this tune

I don't have anything I would consider a finished tune, yet. I've kind of stalled out in anticipation of the big VF update. I don't think I'll be finished 'soon'.

    What I can say is...
I got good mileage on the stock tune by upshifting with S mode.
I got about the same on OV2.0 in D.
I think I am getting better MPG with shifts in between stock (low) and 2.0 (higher). It's hard to quantify with all the testing I have been doing.

Being completely stock (excluding ~+250 lbs), I can only speculate what would be best for 35/529...
By the numbers, that is shorter gearing than stock; but, there is obviously more RR and mass to accelerate.
I'd say under moderate (non-granny, non-asshole) acceleration you'd want to shift around 2500 rpm for best MPG.
    What tune does that?

Nice tip in in first 4 gears, throttle sensitivity seems to decay gradually until you hit 4th and then it cruises holding 5th and 6th really nice

I thought the stuttering/bucking had more to do with the exhaust? Valves opening 64 degrees BBDC in combination with ignition around 10-15 degrees seems way too early and would seem to be killing power during the combustion stroke. Am I wrong?

Interesting... Mine works flawlessly. There's still the normal issue when you exceed some load threshold it decides to hold a gear longer. Is that what happened in your case? I notice that it does upshift right after the moment that you are referencing... Maybe the built in delay took over because you crossed that load threshold. Looks like you were digging in to the pedal a little before you let off

Also if I let pedal go, RPMS are getting hung at 3000-3100.
In scenarios where I need to slow down due to traffic and gun to bypass on the adjacent lane, the upshift works around expected speeds.
I may just put another ticket in...

Anyway, I have optimized downshif/upshift for 4-5 in S. Works quite nicely on long inclines at speed between 70-80. The tranny would cycle between two gears without hanging.
With all adjustments, the truck pulls really good in 4th between 3500-4000 range. I got scared a few times.
Also I got all TC locking/unlocking for 4-6 back to 2.0/stock state. Before, I would get 100-200 rpms drop when SLU turns on in the middle of on ramp acceleration. now it turns almost immediately after shifting to 4th and no longer affecting the process.
Whoever likes to hold/drive in 4th and make changes to tc locking, make sure check tc temps. If SLU is off, TC temp will go up even driving 25.

Has anyone experienced an uptick in cylinder misfires after tuning? I tuned a 2020 with the regular octane, stock tires, with THX and after approximately 300 miles he's been observing a large increase in misfires. I had mentioned that it takes about 500 miles for everything to sort out but I wasn't sure if misfires is one of the things that should subside? I did reset the LV and AT values after flashing.

Yes my truck pinged at WOT at first tune.
After 500 miles on the tune it is alot better. I drove 200 miles yesterday, drove like hell passing people full pedal mash and I didn't hear it ping at all. Its cool now, summer time will tell.
    Premium thx.
