well i see this thread has been dead since i last posted. i started getting a clunk in my front end when turning down inclines, so i was told to try swaybar links. just put new ones on last night and clunking is gone and truck handles so much better :) bad news still have this slight slight viberation at 35-40. im assuming is the differential bearing sh*t b/c it goes away in 4 wheel drive. i just put a 1/8 washer to drop my carrier bearing and ill see how that feels tomorrow morning. Dont think a CB drop would be necessary though with my 1 3/8 block alreadying having about a 1-2 degree angle machined on it:confused:

i was going to put 5100's in the front and ;eave the rear stock bc i just want to level the front, which would be setting the 5100s at .85 i beleive. i was set to order till reading threads like this. i see most ppl get the vibe at 1.75 and 2.5 but still experience it at .85. im wondering if getting a front diff drop kit would solve this problem and wont lead me to needing a new front diff, cv axle, bearing etc

The problem is already there. It just makes it noisy so you hear it. Most people dont notice it much at all with only .85. And the diff drop doesnt really do anything noticeable from my testing and several other peoples experiences.

What does the 4WD does that makes the vibration noticeable?

What does the 4wd do(?) that makes it noticeable? Nothing. It goes away in 4wd because the bearing the axle is sitting in spins with the axle. In 2wd, the bearing sits still while the axle spins inside it...thus using the needle rollers of the bearing. It's the axle spinning against those rollers that makes the vibration.

Moose and others, I was a day away from ordering 5100's to set at 1.75 but am not sure after reading all this here and Moose's ordeal on TN. I have an 09 with 7k miles, no mods except rear spring TSB and slightly bigger tires. Do you think staying stock would increase the life of the diff bearing by much? I like the look of the mild lift but looks aren't worth buying a new diff every 30-60k for me.

Does it actually wear out faster with a lift? That's a million dollar question. Will you hear it sooner with a lift, of course (if yours actually develops the problem in the first place). I think staying stock makes it take a lot longer to hear its problems and that with enough miles you would eventually hear it.

If I could do it all over again, would I still lift it? You Bet! The solution is to learn how to replace it yourself and forget about it. If you rely on dealerships to take care of it, then I'd be worried (which is where I was a year and a half ago). If you use a private party to fix it, cost will run you about $500. Also, take a look at all the people with lifts that have never had a problem. We are in the minority here, so keep that in mind. You just have to decide it for yourself. You could always order the fronts and put them on. If you have a vibe immediately and don't want to deal with it, you could sell the shocks in almost new condition to anyone on the forums. If no vibe, keep your stock shocks in case it develops later and you don't want to deal with it. Lots of options.

Thanks for the help, think I'm gonna go ahead with the 5100's and hope for the best.

I don't see it anywhere. I was subscribed to it (all of them), yet it isn't in any of them. I think it was in BenWA's thread (on iPod so can't copy & paste thread link), maybe he had to remove them?

Regardless, the FSM pics are of no help in replacing the bearing.

Remember your truck is under warranty and if it wears out before warranty have dealer replace it. I had mine replaced. Its fine now. I thought it started making noise again but seems okay now. I put my 1.5" aal on and truck drives and feels even better. Now I will probably go to 2.5. (at 1.75 now). Hopefully no problems will arise if so I will go back down. And if worse comes to worse fix it myself (hopefully with help from 05Moose! hahaha...he's in cali). Good luck, hope the 5100s work out and post pics!

I put Pro-Comp +1.75" shocks on my '07 Tacoma a couple of months ago and started noticing the telltale vibration. I didn't think too much of it at first. Fast forward, new Wrangler Silent Armors (second set) [LT275-65-17] and decided to finish my transfer case and differential oil service.

Crawled under the truck today and happened to grab the left side pilot shaft at the front differential and WHOA! At least 1/4" total radial play in the shaft. Right side has about half as much. Truck has just over 80k miles. Looking at the exploded diagram, there appears to be no bearing until will inside the differential, and the end of that shaft basically floats - is that right?

And to think I almost traded the damn thing in back in April for a Trail Teams FJ. Shite.

    Guys,
I have a 2012 that I put 5100's on set to 1.75" at 8,000 miles on the odo. I immediately notice a faint vibration/grumble at 35-40mph. It is faint enough that I can't tell if it comes/goes w/4x4 but it is definitely there and much worse cold. Rear is simply stock leaf pack with firestone ride rite airbags.
The most interesting thing to me, is that I am lifted the same height as the "baja" tacomas, but I'm wondering if toyota did something to address this on those? To my knowledge they are the same diff, hub, cv and control arms.
There is no point in me taking it to the dealer because the lift clearly causes the issue.

Great to hear that there is a permanent solution available down the line if I need it. I ended up going with a front diff drop spacer and carrier bearing spacer and the vibes are gone to the point that I don't really notice them anymore. I know that it doesn't really make sense that the carrier bearing spacer would make any difference to a front end vibration issue, but somehow the angle change or something did just enough to make it almost a non-issue to me now.

Haven't posted on this thread forever but unfortunately the vibration has come back and now it doesn't go away in 4WD. I don't have the technical know-how or money to do the ECGS bearing route and was wondering if there could possibly be any cheaper fixes and if there is any lube spots (front diff etc.) that I should get topped up that could make a difference. Cheers

Sorry to bring back an old post but this one was the most informative to me. I had Bilstein 5100's put on today set at .85. I noticed the vibration around 40mph as soon as I left the shop. After reading this thread I took it straight to the dealer and they diagnosed exactly what you all have experienced. They ordered me a new needle bearing and will install it under warranty. I'm at 41k miles now. They did mention that it will wear out faster with the lift.
