So I have had this problem from mile 2 with my truck. It is now 4 mos old, 9K miles. I can not rotate my tires, if I do the vibration moves to the front. Have had wheels/tires changed and 5 wheel balances, (3 at dealer and 2 at independent shop). I am truly hoping it is a defected tire although I doubt that is the problem.

Talked to the service manager and he lets me drive a brand new 2011 they had on the lot identical to mine. It has the exact same vibration! Identical to mine! The one I test drove also had a bad shake in the steering at 65. (Mine did too when it was new, after the tire and rim swap that cleared up). This "new" test drive vehicle had 420 miles on. I am thinking others are test driving it and won't buy it because of the vibration.

This is BS with these trucks. I think there is a design defect that Toyota does not know how to fix. That, or the crappy steel wheels/and or tires are manufactured so poorly that none of them will ride smooth.
MAJOR LESSON LEARNED FOR ME: Never buy one these trucks without test driving at highway speeds.

And the verdict is.... Drum roll... They swapped drive shafts with one from a new truck and the vibration went away. Then they put back my original shaft so I have to wait for the new one to come in and make another appointment.

They are installing a new drive shaft on my truck on Tuesday. They have replaced the third member already with no luck. Hope this works for me as well.

    Bilstein 5100"s in the front

    Yes Sir..

    i got a 2005 4X$ Double cab with +-65000 miles.
front bilstein 5100 set at 2.5"

Last week, I started to notice a humming noise at around 60-70 mph. It only does it when i have my foot on the gas, not when i let go of it. also it's only when i'm in 6th gear (at 60mph).

I'm rotated my tires and the vibration/humming noise is there.
i tried 2 3/8" fender washers and no luck, so i took them off (i tried that after reading other threads of people having luck with spacers)
not sure what to check next :(:(:confused:

They instaled my new drive shaft yesterday in Anchorage and, WHALA, I drove 150 miles through the mountains and the vibration is COMPLETELY GONE! I was really happy with the service at Kendall. They were comitted to fixing this problem no matter what. So, all together they replaced the third member and the rear drive shaft. I hope this helps other people and that the problem is gone forever.

I am glad others have kept up on this. I wonder if they will recall these now? Mine still makes the vib sound but my dealer keeps tellin me it is normal.

Sorry, I dont feel like going through all nine pages but did the OP ever figure out the problem? I have the same issue. My steering wheel has a little movement but not much and if nobody is in the passenger seat it shakes. It isnt anything too bad but still :(

I guess, we all get used to it after a while, so it seems less annoying. I still have the vibration and it has nothing to do with wheels, tires, front end, brakes, etc.

    It only happens when accelerating.

From day 1 I thought it was caused by transmission AND/OR drive shaft.

UPDATE !!! Got the truck back today with the new drive shaft. Up to 50mph was smoother than I have ever had it. It's been vibrating since new, 15000 miles ago.
I am anxious to get it on the highway tomorrow morning. I'll update again.

Excellent, I've been wondering about a high frequency vibration I've been feeling lately. I hope the replacement driveshaft works for you to solve the problem.
My dealer replaced a U-joint in the driveshaft and it helped but did not completely remove the vibration. I checked it out and there is a little bit of rotational play in the splines where the two piece driveshaft joins together, I wonder if that is normal? Could just taking the driveshaft to a transmission or performance shop to have it re-balanced possibly fix it instead of replacing it? Hmmmm...

    Any updates or TSB's?

I dropped my carrier bearing with OME's fitment kit. It's still there. Possibly worse. I'll know more later today.

I also noticed a good amount of play from pushing up and down on the shaft right at the CB. Is this normal? Hard to think that it is.

    Thanks.

mine goes away when i rotate the tires. there is one tire that causes the vibration when i rotate it to the front, otherwise there is no vibration. i've had that specific tire balanced 3 times and it still does the same. my friends driving alongside said that there was no wobble, even tho my steering wheel is going crazy. i think that there might be too much rubber on one section of the tire

You know it's funny to see this back at the top again. My last 05 had this minor 60mph driveline vibration and I never did find the source of it. I had heard of people swapping driveshafts, trans mounts, tires, etc. only to have it still there. So I figured it was normal and lived with it for 2 years. Sold the truck and drove a beater 96 for a year until I got my current truck. Nearly identical to the old one. DCSB 4x4 V6/auto and the thing is smooth as silk regardless of speed. So now I know it wasn't normal...

So I after reading 8 pages, I am still not sure if the problem will definitely be solved with a new driveshaft.

I had a 2008 DCLB that did not have this problem

My 2014 DCLB has this exact problem and I was figuring on driving it until it the sound got really bad or something broke, and only then I cold tke to the dealer and say, see, I want this fixed ASAP!

More grist for the mill... I bought a new 06 dbbl cab TRD in 06. It has been amazingly quiet and smooth, until about 165K miles. I had a u-joint go bad and it was creating a shudder on takeoff. So I replaced it and everything smoothed out again.

Then I replaced the other two and the carrier bearing at 180K, and got new tires. Then this vibration started. Its the same deal as other where it groans loudly at 60-65 on highway, in drive or neutral and regardless of engine RPM's.

I thought it was the tires but now I suspect that the internal damper in the drive shaft is moving around. I am going to let the tire store do a full checkout and balance but if it still exists, I am just going to take the driveshaft to a local custom place that builds nice shafts and have them dissect it and rebuild and balance if its fine.

Question for the suspension tech heads on here... What would be the downside of a one piece shaft for the double cabs?

I will advise on my results.
