Back on here again to figure another issue that ive started battling with my taco recently. About 2 months ago I swapper a locking rear axle from a 03 trd into my sr5 99. All was great she locks up good harness works, and she was driving perfectly smooth till about 2 weeks ago. It started vibrating at lower speeds around 20-30 I can feel it and the dash starts making that first gen squeaky sound. It would go away at about 40 but now I’m starting to feel it at higher speed too. I put it up on the lift and rebalanced as well as roadforced all the tires. Ran it while it was jacked up, got up to speed and could feel the vibration in the air. Driveshaft seem to be spinning smooth as silk although I know my carrier bearing is due for replacement, I could definitely tell the rear wheels were wobbling quite a bit and that’s what was making the vibration. I have procomp alloy steelies that are strong as balls and I rotated them around, no change in the wobbling they all moved about the same on the rear. I’ll be putting a dial indicator on the axle tmrw if I get time after work, thinking I might have a bent axle shaft but that sounds very hard to do and I don’t know how it would be riding smooth when I first installed. Sorry for the long as forum, any and all help is appreciated!

A few of us here have had the rear brake drums cause pretty significant vibrations. Myself included. It isn’t while braking but just as you’re driving. Could be worth trying to get yours rebalanced or getting new drums.

The guy I bought them from mentioned replacing them not that long ago and they aren’t even rusted, I’ll see what the dial indicator says with the drum and on the axle tmrw maybe I’ll be able to see something, thanks for the shout

How about a bad rear wheel bearing perhaps? Did you check for any play in those?

The drums don't have to be the cause here- bad shoes, or wheel cylinder causing drag or chatter against the drum could be a culprit too. If someone else did the shoes and drums, it'd be worth popping the drums off and ensuring that they actually did the brake job correctly.

Yea I took the drums off today everything with the brakes looks good, the axle is definitely wobbling quite a bit on both sides, I posted a video I have but for some reason tw won’t let me upload it. Wobble is coming from axle area tho, what you guys recommend looking into parts wise?

Want a solution, swap your old axle back in and call it good. At a later time, buy a Harrop elocker for the 8.4 or learn to live with the vibe if you want the locker option.

Wobble can be cause by many different variables such as having a bent housing, bent inner shaft, bad wheel bearing, to uneven/unbalance drum. Just because the drums look new doesn’t mean anything nowadays with fleabay and the book store parts. Throw on your old drum and see if they wobble with the elock axle.

If you’re that stressed about drowning in the project and pouring unnecessary money into this Tacoma, it’s time to buy a Jeep.

Harrops are like 1500 and I ain’t spending that much on my dif till I regear when I go bigger than 33s. I’m not stressing, I just don’t have the time for this many projects but I know it’s what I signed up for, I’m a Toyota guy through and through. I took the brakes off and was looking directly at the axle, it’s wobbling pretty bad. i don’t see wheel bearings making it wobble on both sides. Why would I just throw a ton of money at it or go back to what I didn’t like? Doesn’t make send to me. If anything I swap in the old one and figure out what is bent or off on my current elocker one I just don’t see what would be making it wobble so bad in both sides. Anyways thanks for the help I appreciate it
