Does anyone know why my 2001 2.4 automatic vibrates when idling in park?

Is there anything done to it?
    Do you have an exhaust?
    Loss of power?
    Any codes?

    improved toyota goodness.
torque converter maybe? possibly not unlocking and allowing enough slip which puts more load on the engine pulling it down at idle causeing it to vibrate...any other symptoms? fast jerky shifts? having to really hold the brake at a stop?

had a 97 ford escort that did this and it was torque converter...idled fine in nutral and park and drove fine with no codes...just idle weird and sometimes ( very seldom only in winter-very cold) stalled in the first few miles if it wasnt warmed up before i drove it...

all 4 cylinders idle rough in gear like its missing or something, hundreds of guys here have spent small fortunes replacing everything they can think of and nothing ever fixes it.

its normal so just learn to get used to it and don't waste time or money on something you cant fix.

Check all your exhaust hangers. Maybe where the pipe goes into the muffler. Sometimes they rust out, break and doesn't even look like it.

When you're in gear the truck will idle lower because there's a load on the engine. 4 bangers do idle rough. My 2TR is much rougher than the 2J in my IS300. It's all about balance.

Learn to love your truck for all its shakes and rattles and you'll live a much happier life.

mounts. my toyota tech buddy says it's the tranny mount. check them. have someone rev the engine while you're looking at the mounts or the engine itself. it will probably tilt a bit without the body. the body is supposed to tilt with the engine.

ever see an old 22r or 22re motor starting up in a toyota pickup? they shake like crazy. bad mounts is all.

here's a motor starting up and revving with bad mounts. you can see it shifting a bit.

here's a 22r motor starting up with good mounts. can barely see any movement.

vibrations when idling in drive happen because the tranny is slowing down the engine and it runs unbalanced under idling RPMs. your mounts are supposed to soften that imbalance and prevent any roughness. old, disconnected, or hardened mounts cant do their job properly.

this is the case like 85% of the time
