New member. Just purchased a 2016 Tacoma TRD, excellent condition with 28,000 miles. Love the truck. The vehicle has a vibration when braking or deceleration. Found TSB T-TT-0398-16 which describes the problem. Local dealer service manager test drove and agreed the vibration existed. However he was very evasive about repair and coverage but acknowledged the TSB. The vessel is out of waranty by date but still has drive train warranty. Local service manager not returning calls. My research says this problem is due to an axel or brake drum problem but is hard to diagnose. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, did Toyota repair it and what was the fix?

If your VIN is within the TSB, they should fix it. Big thread around here on this, search 'vibration'

Yes Toyota has acknowledge and made repairs usually involves replacing brake drums, axle shafts either one or both among other things. Call the dealership request to make an appointment that the Toyota regional rep look at the vessel for his opinion in writing on how to proceed per TSB as he would be the final authority as to wether your claim under the performance contract would be honored by Toyota. The dealer is not a party to that contract they are the authorized agent to perform such work authorized by Toyota. The regional rep is usually available at the dealership once a week or once a month depending on the dealership. A dealership can deny a customer “concern” or customer “complaint” but they can’t unilaterally deny a claim on a contract that they are not a party to and your paperwork should reflect that. So call the rep, Toyota may fix it as a courtesy since you are right on the cusp with the 3yr. 36k warranty. Good luck

I think of all the vibrations my Tacoma emits as a built-in massager.

This particular vibration is normal, OP.

It's a legendary design quirk with these trucks that extends back a decade or more. 3rd gen people act like this is new to the 3rd gen but its not. Do some digging and you will see posts from 2008 with people complaining about deceleration vibes from 15-25 mph.

It's just how these trucks are. I strongly suggest you learn to accept it as characteristic of the vehicle and move on, otherwise you will tear your sanity to pieces trying to force Toyota's hand on something they don't official acknowledge is a "problem".

Then why are the creating TSB's for it? Why did they just change my drums on my 2019? Why did they change the driveshaft on my 2009?
Just asking, seems like they know there are issues. Doubt they'd pay to fix if the really believed it was in fact, 'normal'.

I drove my Tacoma 150 miles today. Most of it on the freeway.

When the truck cruises above 70 MPH there’s a vibration through the entire truck. I can even feel it through the steering wheel. The vibration comes and goes as if there was something cycling through for about 20 seconds at a time: vibration increases for 20 seconds, then it decreases for 20 seconds...then comes back again.

I am not too concerned since the truck only has 2,000 miles, but it is just very weird.

Thanks for all the replys. Brought back to dealer who had it for a week trying to fix problem. Turned the rear drums - vibration is still there but not as bad. Service manager stated they checked run-out on axels and checked drive train angles and found all within spec. He stated he test drove a 2018 and new 2019 and found the same problem. Other owners have stated this is inherent problem as well. Very surprised that toyota would have this problem and not find a fix given the threads I have read with same problem in prior years.

It seems that Toyota has taken a position that a problem that occurs in multiple vehicles is not a problem and that it is normal because it happens to all of them. The vibration problem is just one of many "normal" issues.

Hate to say this, but what they did with your brakes was a waste of time. Resurfacing drum brakes is what they initially did to mine as well, along with changing out axle shafts. Then the vibration came back just as bad, when braking. Toyota Rep looked and said that the drum brakes were over tightened from factory and caused warping. Thus, the vibration during braking between 40 and 15 mph. (Approx)

They replaced my brakes with new drums and now the problem is gone. 6k miles later, still no sign of vibration. Turning/resurfacing the drum brakes is what the mechanics/dealership prefer to do, because they get to charge Toyota Corp more for that job than to change out the brakes completely.

I returned to local dealer today after test driving my Tacoma yesterday-still same problem. Service manager let me test drive a 2019 Tocoma TRD extended cab right off the delivery truck. The same vibration was there but not as bad as my 2016 which makes me believe the problem worsens with age. Dealer acknowledges the problem but does not know how to fix. Dealer said until Toyota recognizes the problem and a fix there is nothing more they can do. Will contact toyota to file a formal complaint.

I really think you guys should just sign it off as a quirk of these trucks. I've got the same vibration and it's not that big of a deal. Very minor... Yeah I wish it wasn't there, but I'm not going to ruin the entire time I have with the truck over a tiny annoyance.

    Just my 2 cents.

I've got the vibration when on the freeway at 70+ MPH, and I have to say, it's an annoyance to say the least. I love the truck for driving around town, which is 90%+ of my use, but avoid taking it on long drives. The vibrating cabin and shaking steering wheel get old real fast, and it's even more annoying when there's nobody in the passenger seat. Sorry, but it's inexcusable for any vehicle to exhibit these symptoms if things are to spec.

Vibration means wear, wear means eventual failure. Just saying.

I wish, in one of the fawking threads, someone would tell me what the perfect pickup truck is so I can go buy it.

These auto enthusiast forums are the epitome of “if it’s not one thing, it’s another”.

Reading all the complaining, on any forum, but TW in particular, is like being a polygamist with 13 nagging wives. Toyota breeds a special sort of complaining as people buy them thinking they are perfect and start analyzing every nuisance, while ignoring the fact they bought the cheapest truck on the market (excluding Nissan)

FFS.......please tell me which pickup truck does not have weird noise, vibration, rattles, surges, harsh shifts, strange throttle response, etc.......so I can go buy that truck.

    Thanks in advance.

The new era of Toyota pickup enthusiast is a straight up fucking disappointment.

Because folks expect a well/PROPERLY engineered vehicle when they're paying $30K+++ for it? I could understand some minor quirks, but the vibration issue is inexcusable, and there should be an investigation and TSB/recall issued for it by Toyota. To say it's "normal" is asinine. None of the other vehicles in my family have a vibration like this, and they range from 1998 to 2014.

I love the truck, and can tolerate the funky transmission with it's odd shifting behavior and constant downshifting, but Toyota can't manufacture a vehicle that rolls smoothly down the highway? Really????
