I am told that the ND 34 SOL kit has a plunger that is 34.8mm and the ND 36 SOL plunger is 36.8mm. If somebody could help me out here I would appreciate it. My engine is a 3.4 liter V6 and I need to know which kit to buy.

I talked to a guy at Victory Lap. He wasn't too sure about which kit I should order, but seemed to think the N34 kit would fit. So I ordered it.

I capitulated! Gave up. Said "Screw it!" :censored:

The day after the parts arrived I began to remove my starter. I was 65 years old when I last did that job. I reviewed everything I could find and found Timmy's video to be the best. Unfortunately there were some slight differences between the vehicle he mad the video with and my truck. Remember, I'm working on a 6-cylinder engine.

    1. The first problem was that I just could not get the small plug off of the starter. There is no way I can put my hand along the pan and slide it up to that plug because something keeps blocking my access. I could reach the plug from behind but I think that the amount of dirt and crap that had accumulated and that is lodged between the clip and the plug's body made it impossible for my to pinch the latch together and then pull the connector out. And I couldn't remember which side of the plug the clip was on, or if I had to pinch it or pull up and release to to be able to disconnect the plug.

    2. The second problem was that no matter how hard I tried (and I worked at it for at least two hours) I could not get a socket over the top bolt that holds the starter to the bell housing and make it stay there long enough to break it loose. Working from behind the tranny I had over three feet of extensions and one universal socket to work with. When I did this job in 2010 that method worked nicely. But not this time. Maybe I left out a step somewhere, but I don't know where.

    3. The straw that broke the camel's back was that the bolt holds the exhaust bracket to the exhaust pipe was rusted and bone dry. Using all the strength I had, I just could not get it to budge with a 1/2 inch ratchet. Maybe that was a good thing though because if I were a bit stronger I might have broken that bolt. :frusty:

So that is the first time in over 65 years that I failed to complete (or even to begin to complete) a job. :sadviolin:And I have the feeling it won't be my last.

I think I purchsed my parts at the dealership, it was years ago, and IIRC, I replaced the brushes too. Getting old is a bitch. I find my self buying tools that I would not have considered 10 years ago to do some of the little jobs that turn to poo.
