I'm installing a Prinsu rack and want to protect the paint. Initially I was thinking gloss black vinyl but then I saw some people doing plasti dip. I don't have much experience with either. What's the ups downs of the two options? What about gloss over flat?

I'm running a rack and honestly the rack it's self offers plenty of protection to the roof and I've carried ladders, canoes, Rotopax and never had an issue.

Vinyl is likely tougher, but harder to repair if damaged. Plasti-dip is not as tough, but if it's damaged, you can just spray some more on (although it won't look "clean").

Of the two, my vote would be vinyl.

Plasti-dip is going to start to peel after awhile so removing a roof rack every two years and reapplying Plast-Dip will get old quick.

I would wrap it if I was you.

Vinyl wrap! It will also likely be $200 or under to have it installed.

I doubt I will suffer any damage from cargo either but it's also going to serve another purpose. When there was a camper on the bed the weather ring rubbed a huge line in the roof around the top portion of the window. Painting it is not really worth the money. I think vinyl with the rack will make for a decent looking repair and give me extra storage.

My experience has been the opposite. Rather than starting to peel off it dries and bakes in the sun making it VERY difficult to remove. Same issues can happen with vinyl but it'll take longer. You should talk to some pros, but if it's exposed to the sun I think you're looking at probably a 3-5yr lifespan for vinyl.

I'd choose vinyl. Hands down. I've really come to dislike plasti-dip. It has it's uses but I feel it's very much overused and isn't the cure-all that people think it is.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing. I spend part-time in the AZ desert so it will be cooked by the heat. Seems like another reason to go vinyl.
