Anyone seen the new Viper SmartStart system? You can remotely start/lock/unlock your truck with your iPhone from virtually anywhere! I'm sure the iPhone haters don't care, but I love stuff like this. Not having to carry around a key fob would be pretty cool. Plus, anything that I can control my iPhone with makes having it that much better. Now I'm waiting for a home security control app that I can arm/disarm, view alerts, and view home security cams all from my phone... someone's gotta be working on that one. Anyway, check it out...

thats pretty sweet... why can't they make this kind of stuff for the blackberry??? ohh well.

i see that you have to have a service plan to use it though... but not bad at $30 a year..

Don't know... you should get an iPhone. :D

The $30 a year for the service isn't bad at all like you said. That service is what allows you to lock/unlock/start your truck from another state if you wanted. Not that you would ever be stuck that far away from your truck and need to do any of those functions... but you could. What if my wife used the truck to take MORE clothes and MORE shoes and MORE purses to the Goodwill and locks the keys in the truck? I could unlock it from virtually anywhere... then I would ream her for taking my truck without permission. hahaha :D

would this work with a manual transmission? my thinking is no not the remote start function due to the fact that you cant remotely push the clutch haha

i like the iphone but not at&t... thus the reason i dont have one...

and i'm sure one could hack the kit to work on a manual tranny however its not very safe as if you did leave it in gear and try and start it it would take off.......

Older yotas had a "clutch start cancel" switch which eliminated the need to depress the clutch pedal to start, just make sure it aint in gear!

Most new vehicles have a clutch safety switch and a Neutral safety switch. If the car is left in neutral (using the E-brake to keep the vehicle stationary) the remote start will work because the neutral safety switch will override the clutch safety switch.

It's still rumors, but AT&T should be a little worried... check this... http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/04...n-talks-to-distribute-iphone-in-2010-report/3

Regardless of what network I'm on, I want to start my truck in Virginia while on the beach in San Diego... just to say I did. :D

I would buy the I phone so quick if I could get it on the verizon network! I strayed from VZW once a long time ago and regreted almost imidiately.

1- They have plenty of remote start kits that work on manuals. If you leave it in gear, it's intelligent enough to not attempt to remote start.

2- It costs 30$ a year, and needs an additional 250$ module to plug into your existing viper alarm that is the gsm device that talks to the cell network. Unsure of the cost of the software if it is seperate, I think it's included with the module.

3- Iphone only! Another apple exclusive contract, so you need to be either on at&t or some other GSM network, like t-mobile. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA networks, so no go there.

Too expensive for my taste, and too restricting. My fancy keyfob will get me by just fine.

I'm trying to justify whether being able to start a vehicle from anywhere is worth the $400 upgrade. The reciever without SmartStart still has an impressive 1mile range...
