I don't love inspections, especially since here (MA) they've gotten stricter with them having to be done on camera.

That said, LED or HID in a stock reflector lens is a risk to others on the road b/c the light scatter blinds oncoming traffic, so it's not about the vehicle per se as the others around it and those people's safety too.

Can we get back to discussing how much it sucks to live in Virginia? :) I was there back in the 80s and their inspection process was an absolute ball buster back then, they would fail you for the stupidest shit. I can only imagine what a PITA it must be now.

Look, you are completely self unaware. I could really care less what you do to your truck, but when it impacts me, that is where I draw the line. What gives you the right to blind all the other drivers on the road?

Its easy as can be. I have lived here my whole life and been dealing with state inspection, been throught the state police inspectors school and its a non issue for me. If your vehicle is in good condition, lights, brakes, tires is really all that matters in a nut shell. I have never been failed and never had an issue. I make an appointment and I'm done in about 15 minutes. Up north in Va. is where the emmissons is an issue but I have never had an emmissions test done on any vehicle in Va. and I have a small fleet of cars at times.

My understanding is that CA does not allow active duty to retain CA registration if the vehicle is located outside CA, whereas most (many?) other states allow active duty to retain plates in their home state. NC, FL, even VA I believe are common ones.

So you will probably need to swap your plates to VA at some point.

But I am no expert on the subject, maybe some military folks can chime in and correct/confirm.

Might be worth a call to the DMV to work out details.. I'm military as well, and I've seen plenty of other military folks around here that still hold their CA registrations. I held my FL registration for awhile, and still hold a FL license.. switched to VA registration a few years back, but just had to change the address on my FL license.

It gets hairy with CA… they will actually revoke your registration if the vehicle is insured under an address out of the state.

@Nu2taco Google is your friend here.

Even if nothing is said, simply changing the address on your insurance very well might be picked up by CA. If their system detects that you do not have active insurance in CA, they will automatically revoke your registration, meaning you are driving around without valid plates.

Use that info as you please :D

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Lol, back in the day when I lived in rural Va I walked into a buddies old shop and said “hey I need an inspection” he would say, is everything good? I would say yes and he would tell me to fill out the book properly and to get my sticker and leave $20 in the tool box. He would laugh and say. I can’t make no damn money spending an hour on your shit for $20. I miss the good ol boys back in the sticks.

On top of that my aunt worked at DMV so it was nice to ummm visit her at work. She would say hi then reply I assume this is more than a social visit. LOL...

Its still like that but its done by computer. Still can be in and out in 15 minutes. FYI, get to know your state inspector!!!
