My girlfriends computer just caught a serious virus.... pretty much made her computer completely unusable...

I have 13 year old kid in my house who has a tendency to try to sneak porn sites and internet games on her computer. Her computer was fine last night, today its going ape shit. the 13 year old is adamant about not being on the computer. The comp had virus software and firewall updated...

is there anyway that the computer could get the virus without someone downloading it thru porn, game, some other means.

Basically could it catch the virus without inside help?

Or is it pretty safe to say... that the kiddo is a fucking liar?

    thanks...

Yes it can get virus through other means....but chances are the 13 yr old kid is lying. It could have been from a contaminated file attachment or something like that.

Have you run a history or cookie check? And do you know what kind of virus it is? You may be able to find a step by step instruction of how to remove it. Youtube actually has some good videos on how to get rid of stuff like that. Good luck

most viruses are from porn in reality...you click to watch a video, it tells you to update your whatever, so you're like, well i really want to see the hot chick touch herself, so you update it, next thing you know you got a billion pop-ups and weird icons in your task bar. no way someone can just install a virus, you gotta open/download/click/agree to whatever the hell it was. porn and downloading shit illegally is where its at...from what i hear..from my friend...

ok, but it would have had to be a file that a person would have to download...

the comp sat on all night without anyone messing with it...

kiddo was alone at home for about 2 hours this morning with the comp on and in front of him.

the virus won't allow anything to open, it blocks the files and says its corrupted and that I should run their virus scan bs

yeah the virus also opens the browser to either porn or "anti-virus software"

plus there are new icons in the tool bar

so its pretty safe to say that if everything was fine last night, and the GF didn't download anything... then the kiddo was screwing with the comp while we were gone this morning

Download Malwarebytes from malwarebytes.org. Install the program and then rename the .exe file to some other name. Then run the .exe file to open the program. Update it and then use it to do a full scan of your computer. It will detect all malware stored on your computer. Once it finishes scanning delete all the malware, that should take care of it. I just had to go through all this crap with my wife's laptop.

I know that virus. It was from porn surfing. If you have anti virus it'll block you from opening that too. Restart your girls comp and as it restarts, press F8 until you get the option to start it in safe mode. If you start in safe mode, you should be able to effectively run a virus scan and remove it.

Also, it may hide other files elsewhere in the comp. Google search it and you can get a list of all the locations where the virus may hide and you can manually remove it (if anti-virus in safe mode doesn't grab it already).

Not to insult intelligence, but I'd feel wrong if I didn't mention it. Do NOT go to anything financial or anything dealing with personal identity info until that shit gets taken care of.

but should I go on the internet with her computer... maybe I should do it on my computer and transfer it via disk or something, right?

The scan needs to be run from the infected comp (in my experience). Anything transferred over while not in safe mode will be infected. If you can get her comp to restart in safe mode you should be ok.

If you can even get to the internet on her comp, just don't access anything that will compromise personal info.

Humanoids method might work too. I tried it on my comp but the virus was blocking me. I'd say go his way first. If the virus blocks you from his method, safe mode it.

Check if your IE is set to a proxy server. The entry for that should be blank. I've seen friends infected through that setting.

I had that same stupid virus on my comp. What I did was after booting in safe mode I did the system restore and reset the computer to the settings from last week, then did the virus scan thingy and haven't had a problem since.

Damn kids and porn..... I never do that:p

How about System Restore? If you have AVAST anit virus which I like to use. It has a feature where you can do boot scan which is really great because it scan before anything gets booted up. Try the malware software. It might just be some mal messing around. Porn sites are notorious for malware attachments.

P.S all anti-virus software don`t protect you from Malware. It will be a good investment to get Malwarebytes. Good Luck!!!

If you don't download music through limewire or something like that, it could be that the virus is just hiding in the music files.
