Want to buy a Volant cold air intake but really like the new powercore filter they offer. Unfortunately they don't offer a CAI with the powercore filter. They do offer it for the 06-09 FJ and 12-15 Tacoma and was wondering if those CAI will fit in my '10. Or is there a way to put the PowerCore filter in the 05-11 CAI kit?

Not sure of the filter fitment, but the difference in the actual air box itself is the provision for relocating the vacuum pump onto the box. Fitment otherwise is the same as far as I know.

So basically the 2012-15 Volant air intake will just have that extra piece for the vacuum pump which isn't present on 2005-11 cold air intake? Is that piece removable or get in the way of anything? Thinking of just getting it and seeing how it fits.

So I got an email from Volant saying this,

"Unfortunately, due to air flow requirements, the power core filter is not available for the 4.0L in 2010.

This filter would bring more air than the vehicle can adjust for."

That's weird to me. The 1GR-FE that's in my 2010 is the same as 2012-15 Tacomas and in 2006-09 FJ Cruisers and they offer the PowerCore filter for those vehicles equipped with the exact same engine. Are they tuned differently than my 2010? Pretty sure the Dual VVT-i 4.0L was only offered on 09+ 4Runners, 09+ FJ Cruisers, 11+ Tundras.

Correct. That portion of the air box is molded into the plastic, and not removable. Although I guess you could put a block plate of some sort on there. Not that you would need to I guess, because there's two other holes in the air box. As far as air flow concerns go I'm afraid I don't know. I have heard of some issues with MAF sensors and lean conditions with this setup though, so maybe that's what they're talking about.

After clarifying that the engines are the same I got this reply from Volant, "The boxes, ducts and filter all effect air flow.

With the differences in the system a powercore, may not be correct for the application, due to the way the system reacts"

So apparently, since my truck doesn't have a vacuum blower, and have no need for an extra piece to accommodate mounting the air intake with it present. I still can't believe that this extra non functional piece contributes to 05-11 Tacoma's not being able to "handle" this filter.
