So I am looking for a new cold air intake and I have a lot of interest in the Volant system with the scoop. Does anyone have any experience with one? I am mainly wondering about sound quality and torque production. And also, how do people feel about the K&N intake system?

Well, for one I don't think they make a scoop for ours. I believe that's 2nd gen only. Second, don't use the oiled filter that comes with it. Slap on a dry filter. I use the Donaldson powercore g2 I think it's called iirc. But plan to get a different conical dry filter which atm I can't remember the brand. Thing with that though is it's a really tight fit in the box using the Donaldson filter. But I certainly like the kit. I think it's better than k&n just because it comes with the box versus the open shield k&n uses. I wouldn't say it's a huge investment. But I don't regret getting it. It's just the oiled filters really suck. I'll try and find those other filters I spoke of.. Other than that, I really like the sound. It's certainly louder than stock, but not too loud. Only when you get on it though. I'm not sure on the power gains, but I did feel an increase in the butt dyno. I say go for it. Or maybe wait until black Friday rolls around and see if you can get a good discount. I got mine from autoanything.

Here is the filter I was thinking of. R2C conical filters. No oiling. Synthetic fiber. No washing and letting it dry. Just blow it out with compressed air and done (if that's even needed). Use one of these with the volant kit and you'll be golden.

And this is the Donaldson powercore filter that I have on it now. It's pricey, but can be had cheaper if you look around or wait for sales. But yeah, this one requires NO maintenance, whatsoever. Good for 4years or 100k miles.

Thanks! This helps a lot. My flow master 40 muffler sounds great but I just need to do something about that engine sound.

I suggest making your own... cheap too. Used PVC and a kit from Napa which came with SS clamps, grommets & flex tube. Definitely use the OEM air box and a dry filter. I'm using a Fram. I modified the inside of my air box which definitely helped.

    Good luck.

I have some experience with almost everything mentioned, so I'll add my 2¢:

K&N: came with my truck, MAF was gunked up terrible. Good sound but oil sucks.

Volant: OK, I only sort of have experience...had one on a sports car and there was noticeable power improvements (0-60 tested) but I couldn't tell a sound difference over the loud engine.

Deck plate mod/ISR delete: followed instructions from a T4R forum for my wife's 3.4. Can't really tell a power difference but there is a HUGE noise difference, which I like.

My suggestion is the last one.

I just installed mine with the ram air last night. I bought mine on Cyber Monday... after doing the installation I'm under the impression that the kits they sell on Black Friday and Cyber Monday are of slightly lesser quality. The fit was prettty tight! I'm sure they could have done something better with the fitment of the hose that runs off the vaccum pump (I honestly don't even know what that system does).
As far as instructions go... yeah... they suck! But there are plenty of videos on youtube that do a good job explaining what to do (Volant even has one... they do a good job of making it look easy).
As far as performance and mpg's.. I'm not sure yet. I just put it on last night and only managed to take it out for a test run. I didin't notice much of diffence in HP's but the sound is pretty sick!
    Best of luck!

What size pvc did you use. I attempted this but it seemed if memory serves me right the perfect size would have been 2 3/4 inches. All I could find was 2 and 2 1/2 inch pipe. I was just trying to eliminate that stupid box above the exhaust manifold and use factory hoses and clamps.

I'll need to measure the PVC and get back to you on that.

What I originally did after removing the 'stupid box' was this, measured the opening on the bottom of the flexible black rubber tubing and found that the same size plug was a McCormick's Onion Powder seasoning lid. I stuffed it up there and used a hose clamp to seal it. Worked great... then of course the PVC.

I'll get that measured later today and let you know the size.

Why do people throw money at CAIs for a 190hp engine? What's the point?

If you want more engine noise, just remove the silencers on the stock intake (the big hollow black plastic boxes). It's practically free. The stock air intake is basically cold air as it is.

I completely agree. I modified mine because I can't stand clutter.
I did however, modify the inside of the OEM air box... and no, I do not have the deck plate mod... what motor likes to inhale hot air?

    Good call Thunderone.

My reasoning is the same as stated above, more to remove clutter from engine bay. I think its useless crap and love to tinker. In case anyone wanted to know they pipe would need to be around 2.75 outside diameter to work with stock fittings. 2.5 inch pvc has an outside diameter of 2.85 which should work but will need a indent made to fit over coil pack or angle pipe upward slightly. Then the stupid box thingy could just be removed and this pipe put in to replace it. You would also need to drill hole and make fitting for small line to hook into tube. I maybe attempting this shortly and will post pics when done.

Correct... I used a small butane torch to create the small indent to clear the coil pack and a 1/4" drill bit to make a hole for the small rubber tubing.

    Hope this helps.

I had a volant on mine, it sounded nice. I could tell a tiny power loss after I switched back to stock. Reason being? I moved to CA, and volant doesn't pass emmissions testing out here.

1 major flaw in my opinion: the box used is so massive, if you need to replace a headlight, you've got to remove the whole box to gain access to the light. If you don't need to register in CA, and don't mind taking the box out to replace passenger headlight, I recommend it. I really liked it, in fact.

    Hey guys,

I have a 2015 Tacoma with a couple Mods but nothing special. I had a 2008 With K&N CAI, DYNOMAX exhaust, and a couple other mods. I enjoyed it they way i had it setup but found out some of the Mods weren't the best performance wist.
My question being ; i am debating buying a Cold air Intake and Exhaust again. It seems it is a toss up on the forum about AFE(Usually being the best), Then URD, and then Volant. Any Opinions? Also on the exhaust what would be the best ? I like a nice sound when i get on it, but not everyday traffic. Has anyone used the TRD exhaust? Is that worth it? Any other suggestions are welcomed! Thanks in advance

    improved toyota goodness.
1'' schedule 40 female PVC pipe cap. i sprayed mine black with some leftover bedliner... worked great and then ran the line off it to a T fitting and ran both into the air box on the side hole.
edit; i put mine into the hole previously for the box and it sticks about 1/8''-1/4''into the hose.

Is it a dynomax super turbo? I have been told those are the quietest. Just a little bit more noise than stock.
