I do not believe the air stays in the stock box long enough to appreciably warm up; I believe the larger concern is where the air is drawn from. I'm going to install the RAM ducting but my only goal is to get the intake out of the wheel well as my liners are getting hacked up for larger tires and I am concerned about exposing the factory intake to additional contaminants.

U dont think the large plastic housing on top of the engine gets heat soaked?

Didn't say that but that is a very easy thing to test. Let me see if I can find my IR thermometer and take some readings.

What I am saying is that the air flows through the airbox so fast it doesn't have time to heat up much. By my quick and dirty estimates, at idle the 4.0 Liter engine runs about 16 L through it per second. A high estimate for the volume of the airbox would be 8 Liters, therefore the air in the airbox is exchanged twice every second. No way that is absorbing a lot of heat in such a short period of time.

    https://www.ajdesigner.com/phpengine/engine_equations_air_flow_rate.php#ajscroll

WRT to AFE, aren't those oiled filters? Not gonna happen, I'm sticking with paper. I don't believe their power increase claims and I also believe they let larger particles through.I'm not moving the intake to try and get more power, I just want the intake location moved away from the wheel well because my wheel well liners are getting hacked up for tire clearance.

WRT a snorkel, not gonna happen. I'm not concerned with cutting big holes in the truck but I'm not scuba diving with my truck and I think they look stupid. I have no desire to go through water past my doors, been there done that and it sucks. My former DD TJ maybe, my current Taco no way.

I still have more aesthetic work to do on this setup but amazingly enough all of the components fit without any modification (don’t know if that’s ever happened with anything ever WRT aftermarket changes lol.).

They look the same because afe and volant are the same company. Found that out when I put a volant on my jeep. Went with volant cause they were a few bucks cheaper. And yes it would heat up I did have a buddy once tell me that if you wrap the box in thermal blanket it will keep the air much cooler

I have to point this out because it’s too funny.

From my perspective, you are literally some guy on the internet who’s buddy once told him ________. No offense is really intended here but that is the quintessential unreliable source.

Any information on your intake setup? Thanks.

I have the volant intake system.
But you can just run the volant ram air intake with the stock air box and it works really good and requires less tuning to work well..
Those are pics of just using the ram air scoop.

One of the reasons to change the intake is sucking too much dirt, sand, rocks ect from the stock intake.
The ram air scoop eliminates those problems and is a more effective cold air intake.

AFE makes a scoop as well. I may go with that since they have a 20% off sale.

No it won't heat up much... Most apps can track intake temp from the MAF sensor... If I remember the air is 2-10 degrees hotter than ambient depending on conditions...

If I would have know the cold air intake scoop would just fit I may have just got that.
Easy mod for clean cold air.....
    Looks good...

What year Tacoma do you have. I have a Supercharger in mine and removed my Volant CAI while it was under warranty. Wanting to reinstall but seeing a lot of mixed things about it these days.

What year are you running this with. I want to pick a snorkel and install it on my ‘13. Currently running a Volant CAI but they don’t produce a snorkel kit for the Tacoma. Only the tundra.

Im running the volant box and filter still with a AirFlow snorkel plumbed into it on a 2006 DCSB O/R. My original 4.0 grenaded back in December and now it's got a 2010 4.0 in it using the 06 ECU, with no issues or CEL present. I removed the front ramair scoop that mounts over the radiator when I installed the snorkel. Didn't make much sense to keep it installed with the snorkel.

Now with the new HPtuners flash we can re calibrate the MAF sensor.....
