Okay. Looks like the split part of your bumper is those horns welded directly to the frame?

I was thinking of plating the front of the frame, adding a new crosmember, and bolting the bumper to that, just to make removal an option.

 

The split part?

Once I get a little more experience with tube work under my belt I'll probably redesign my front bumper as well, and I'd like a removable option as well. The plus side to the 2 piece skid is that if I decide to change bumpers and the bottom is at a different locstion, all I have to do is readjust mounting tabs on the lower portion to get the angle correct (and adjust slid size if need be)

 

Just over your left shoulder there are two parallel plates. Those are the frame horns welded on over the crumple zone, right?

That looks good. Now to figure out how to morph that into something for a road truck.

 

What do you mean? Bumper wise? Like I said, I'm thinking on making a bumper like that bolt on, but it would involve chopping off everything on the frame there and welding on a new bolt on mount in place. If I ever get around to doing something like that, I'll share my design and see if anyone is interested lol.

If I could change anything I think Id cut off more of the frame or shorten the frame horns to tuck the bumper in closer for less of an overbite like that. Could probably carve off a couple inches and still have good clearances

 

That's exactly what I'm planning to do. @Finch1018 and I are going to build up at least two based on the general principle.

Maybe a group buy on the frame horns and frame plates. If we can get interest in it we can also get a skid made to match the bumper.

I was expecting to have to cut the front cab mount bracket and plate farther back, then weld the cab mount back on.

 

From the base of the grill to the front of the bumper, how much underbite do you have?

 

I'd have to measure, but off the top of my head Id say 3-4" or so? I would probably tuck it it another inch at the grill to keep room for lights, but make custom frame horns with more angle to tuck in closer at the frame/shorten the frame a hair

 

My goal is to have that center section fit under the plastic OEM bumper. We'll figure out lights later

yeah I looked at yours when I was at the last Mod day. The only issue is there's no skid under the engine and differential. I want full skids from Transfer case to bottom of bumper

 

Thats my issue. Either I cut those tubes, which I like, and lower them and fab something to guard the diff mounts. I have a bud built mid and transfer case skids, I'll mock them up and take a pic. The front bud built skid would not flow onto the existing bumper, so like you said earlier, a custom fit with the right angles would have to be made to work.

Actually thinking something like this, but probably 2 tubes from the bottom of the bumper tubes up to the crossmember for some more support. but then I can run a skid under the truck to the bottom of that bumper, and then another one up to the frame horns

 

that gap and angle are the problems
