    Gents,

On my '11 Taco (all stock sound, JBL) I have a weird quirk with the volume knob on the radio itself.

    Scenario:

Input: Spin knob to change volume.

Outputs: Volume only goes up/down a few numbers (not proportionate to amount of spin I put on the knob); or volume actually goes OPPOSITE of the direction I'm spinning knob; or volume does what feels "normal" and goes up/down in what I would say is a normal/acceptable manner.

It mostly occurs when i spin the knob "fast", but I'm not talking about anything excessive or overly exerting to any normal users standards of use.

Anybody have this issue or can explain?

Try spinning it slower. when I turn mine, I can actually feel each notch as it turns. And each notch is 1 volume level.

Every radio I've ever had with a dial adjustment for volume has done the exact same thing. Cars, stereos, anything with a knob.

Don't know why. But it's not unusual. Slow down!

    Thanks for replies.

Again, when i say "fast", I dont mean anything excessive or abusive. Just trying to put it in perspective. The input is well within what would be considered normal or reasonable operation.

I definetly do NOT feel each click on the volume knob. I DO feel it on the tuner though.

At any rate, the dealer has looked at it and offered to replace it, but frankly I'd rather avoid anyone wrenching on the truck so tring to figure it out here before turning it over for a replacement.

Go even slower then. So you can feel each notch as you turn the dial.

moms 03 4runner does that really bad, very irritating. the 92 pickup I had did it real bad, cept not only did the volume not go up or down correctly, you had to set the knob in the perfect spot to get sound from both speakers

I also have a 2011. The radios must be different for different years. Mine does not have the notch feel on the volume side. Only the tuning side. Mine is not as quirky as yours OP, however I do feel the amount of spin on the dial is not equal to the volume output. If that makes sense. I really have to turn it a lot to get the volume to go up. Relatively speaking.

Hmmm... does yours have the white faced gauge cluster? or the dark ones?

I've never seen your radio, but I believe the volume knob is a rotary encoder on the inside. You could take everything apart and try to clean it with compressed air if it's an optical encoder. Otherwise it will need to go to the dealer for replacement.

Dark. White face started with the 2012 'redesign', if we're talking about the same thing.

If the dealer is replacing the whole head unit, it's a relatively non-invasive procedure. Volume going opposite to the direction of the knob is a straightforward malfunction and should be corrected while your truck is still under warranty.

Actually no. The white face started at some point in the middle of 2011. However, the gauge supplier is different from the stereo supplier, so there shouldn't be a correlation.

I agree, let the dealer replace the head unit.

Thats weird, so there is 2011's with older facia but with newer gauges? I haven't seen those. Then 2012 with newer facia and newer gauges. Are the white gauges the same, 2011 and 2012?

Yes they are the same. The "2012 redesign" started with the trucks produced around December-ish of 2010. Mine was built in September and has the older gauges.

I used to just smack the volume button hard it worked pretty well, but then I decided to just buy a whole new head unit and that works even better.

    thanks to all :)

I will have the dealer replace and hopefully the new unit is "better".

Also, for those who may search something like this in the future, my volume knob does NOT "click" like some have mentioned. My tuning knob DOES click though.

Thanks again to all for input.

Ugh, my 05 just started doing this a few weeks ago too. It's not a speed thing at all, I can turn it up one "click" at a time, and it would turn it self down two notches or up a few notches, or down one notch and up one notch. It's completely erratic. Guess it's time for a new head unit.
