VSV Valve Location

    I have code P0402 coming on. Came on first time about block and a half from the house, had it tested at O'reilly's. Had read shouldn't be the valve if truck is not warm, probably the temp. sensor. Pulled the negative cable, code went off and about 2 weeks late came back on in about the same location as the first time so with the truck not being warm I changed the temp. sensor. About 2-3 weeks later, I have a motorcycle and ride to work sometimes, CL came back on again in about the same location, same code. From what I've been reading probably not the valve itself stuck open because truck isn't warm and valve shouldn't even be opening but whatever tells the valve to open is faulty. Temp. sensor is already changed so I want to change the VSV. From what I hear this is a bear to do because of where it is located. Anyone have advice...pictures or can lead me to a good video to watch that is similar?

    It's the vacuum switching valve connected to the EGR.

    Just because the code is triggering doesn't necessarily mean it's the valve causing the issue.

    Best to give it 12v while running to see if it affects idle and opens the EGR valve.

    Not sure which engine you have, but on the 2.7 it's under the intake manifold. It's the green thing you see in this pic

    It is a little aggravating to get to, but doable. Small hands help.

    This code is a 2 trip code meaning that it will check for proper opperation only after 2 complete drive cycle trips parameter have been meet. Lots of gobbly gook words, sorry, in english it means that the air temp sensor and the coolant temp sensor have to be within 10 to 20 degrees of each other on 2 consectutive starts and this is usually only meet when it sits overnight.

    I realize this is an old thread, but I just did the VSV replacement on my 2.7. One thing to make it a little easier in my opinion: There is an accessible bolt on the side of the little metal bracket holding the VSV. Remove that, unplug the electrical and vacuum lines and take it all out together. In your hands you won't be likely to lose the little screw holding the bracket to the VSV and the little tab that locks into the bracket is a lot easier to maneuver when the bracket is in hand. Put it back as one piece and reconnect everything. Could have saved about 30 minutes if I'd figured this out sooner...
