With a Malone ECU/DSG tune my Golf was a blast to drive. Was Always looking to borrow someone's truck though. But like others said, the DSG Service, the timing, the HPFP Timebomb, DPF cost.... piece of mind that the Tacoma will get me to and from work in whatever weather is also a plus.

From what I glean looking at the Gen 3 forums, it is questionable if the Tacoma will have great long-term reliability as well. Our '12 TDI has gone through 4 Michigan salt-fests (winter), and is still spotless underneath. I've looked at a couple of used Gen 2 Tacomas, and the frames are covered in pretty heavy rust. When dripping A/C causes rust issues on the new ones, it tells me they really didn't do anything different. At least with the HPFP of DPF, those are mechanical and can be replaced. The only reason we are turning in our TDI's is that they are giving us $19K for the Golf (paid $21K) and $23.5K for the '14 Beetle (paid $21K) which is far better than we could ever get trading or selling outright.

I leased mine for very short money. I may buy at the end, may trade up to a nicer model (OR vs my SR5) or get something bigger. I have no long term concerns right now.

    Nope.

I've read the court papers, the paperwork sent to me and gone through the online process. There are 2 separate amounts, the buyback (which is optional, owners can opt for a fix if they choose), and the settlement.

There was also a $1k goodwill package sent out last year to owners. it had a $500 Visa gift card and a $500 card good for use at a VW dealer.

I actually used my $500 goodwill dealer card to get tires for my Taco. It took some calling around, because it's such an oddball size for them to stock. Most wouldn't order them for me at all.

    Both of you are correct...

If you go the buyback route, you get NADA value pre-dieselgate plus your hush money payment of ~$6k. So yes the $6k is included as part of the total buyback value.

If you opt to keep your TDI, you get the hush money and whatever the undecided emission fix that will kill gas mileage, reduce HP / torque, worsen drivability, and reduce emissions equipment longevity.

There is the third route where you could toss your recall notices in the trash and keep driving as is, but this would be dependent on how anal your state decides to be about regulating the recall and you would forego the hush money.

The $1k Goodwill package was annoying because they forced you to burn half at the dealership, so now I'm stuck with 50 qts of 5w40 diesel oil that I can't use in any of the cars I own. Guess I have lawnmower oil changes for the next 20 yrs with sweet sweet Castrol LL03 Professional...

My Jetta has been paprked on a tender since my 17 arrived. Just got my email from VW saying my docs were reviewed and are in order. Loved the car but this opportunity does not present itself often, or ever.

If any of you are looking for a way to spend your $500 dealer card, I just bought 4 Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires for a few dollars over $500 at the VW dealer. They quoted me at $125 a tire which isn't the best price, but a good way to use up your dealer card before it expires. These tires are supposed to be pretty good.

My battery is most definitely dead, I had to pop off the keyhole access cover on the drivers door to get into it for my registration the other day.
And their should be just enough fuel and DEF fluid to get to the dealership.
and it really should have had the oil changed in the last 100 miles, but why would I waste my money for VW's benefit
They might want to check that CEL too

I might be taking advantage of the situation, but i'm losing my ass on it anyways.

Yes they are 2 amounts, but you "buyback" figure includes the 6k settlement.

Have you registered on the court website? You can punch your Vin in and they will tell you the exact buyback amount. I think you are missunderstanding what you are getting...

Maybe I'm misreading what you wrote. What car do you have and what is your final buyback number including everything?

Malone tuning is pretty good for a basic tune. I've had Unitronic, Malone and now currently KermaTDI.
Malone was by far much better than Unitronic.
I had to go with Kerma though after the engine top end rebuild. I need a fully custom tune and Kerma offered more for a better price.

I'm not affected by the emission thing though.
But agree, living in Canada its a nightmare driving a TDI here. In the winter unless I am on the highway my engine never heats up enough for heat. I need to plug in otherwise I can't start. I haven't had any reliability issues so no complaints there. Same case for me I need a truck though, and I'm keeping the TDI as well. Dealer only offered me $1500 for it, I know you'd never get the same money back as mods but considering I have $20k in the engine alone, and just had my timing belt and cams changed no way I'd let it go for 1500, if I wanted to sell it I could get a lot more private sale. But I don't want to part with her. I love my jetta, if it met my needs I wouldn't be buying the taco.

Basic tune? Malone is pretty much the top dog. Karma is awesome in the mk4 world

MK5 market. Malone is great for just basic bolt ons.
injectors, cams, MAP, turbo, exhaust Kerma was better to go with.
If I didn't need custom tuning I would've went with Malone but all my parts were also from Karma and tuning was included.
Malone would've needed my car to do the tuning. Kerma I just had to send them my current tune (which was malone) and then they modfied it for all my mods and dealt with a local shop to have it on dyno while the tuning was being done.
If Malone was to do the same I probably would've stuck with Malone.

Ya I heard that about the mk6 and mk7.
Like I said I have a MK5 and Malone was more money and would've been difficult to have done.
Kerma did all my tuning after the turbo cams and injectors.

I need more money! I was gonna go cr170 turbo with straight exhaust and tune before the buyback. I have stage 1 revo tune right now and that made the car awesome

I'm running the Garrett vnt 110. Great turbo. Love my set up.
Only problem is with all the torque I'm making now. Transmission is wearing fast

I got to test revos show car 2L turbo (gas) making almost 500hp thing was a beast. Revo is great for gas
