Thank you 2j. I was misinformed and thought the 05-15 6 speed trans was the r156f. I found an “05-15 Tacoma 4WD 6 Cylinder Engine manual transmission 90k miles W/Transfer case” (what the ad says) for a decent price. I will sell the R151f and use the more modern transmission that is listed above. Thanks again for your input

no problem, what motor are you trying to bolt it to? And what do you currently have in there?

I think you are mixing up the different 2nd gen tacoma stuff.
There is the 4 cylinder 5 speed manuals which are the R155f/R156f.
And there is the 6 speed manual RA60F for the v6 engine that is completely different and not a "R" series (it is weaker than R series).

So since that says 6 cylinder engine manual transmission, they are talking about the 6 speed and has nothing to do with this thread or the R series transmissions.
That 6 speed transmission will only bolt to the 6 cylinder 1GR 4.0L engine.
If that is the engine you have, then that is the trans you need along with the 6 speed transfer case cause it has a special spline count (the 6speed RA60F, not a R155/R156)

If you have a 4 cylinder motor, or the 3.4l v6, then you can use the R155f/R156f which are short shaft with the right bellhousings and it will bolt up, and use 2nd gen transfer case (from auto or R series).
You can also use a long shaft R150f with the 3.4l v6 with the 3.4l bellhousing (good setup for a 1st gen cause 1st gen transfer case bolts up from auto or R series).

I don't think anyone bolts the R series to the 1gr, at least not without an adapter and that is a whole different discussion and would probably use a long shaft R150f, then you would need the extension housing etc..

So seeing as you didn't mention your engine in either post, no telling what you actually need but from that info you and others can prolly figure it out.

Also 6 speed transfer cases have a different spline count on the input, so they are not easily swappable behind an automatic or a R series. Most of the R series you can bolt up an automatic transfer case to as they share the spline count, but there are some exceptions I think for 4 cylinder ones and maybe those that came with W59 series cant remember.

Also for others it is possible to swap inputs on transfer cases, but having done one before (I put an auto spline on a fj 6speed full time manual shift case so I can use it behind an R series and have AWD without any actuators), it is not for the faint of heart there are lots of bits and pieces that you have to get right. It is doable, but it takes a fair amount of work.

This is all a work in progress but I have a 1.9l VW ALH diesel motor I will be putting in to my 2006 Tacoma. Upon further review, it looks like my best bet might be an RC60f if I can find one with a transfer case ready to go. Feel free to chime in if anyone thinks this is a good idea and/or has any idea where to get anRC60f. Looks like they use the RC60f for the 2.4l diesel hilux so it seems like a good match for the ALH. The RA60F seems like it has a lot of issues after reading about it a little bit.

Hello Tacoma Peeps, I wanted to share my experiences with swapping a R155 into my 01' 2wd tacoma 2.4L. My original W59 was showing its age @ 455,000 miles. I had a little bit of fourth gear bearing noises and thats it.
I was able to get the R155 tranny installed using factory tranny mount and cross member in my truck. The R155 came out of a wrecked 2012 tacoma 2.7L with 117,000 miles($750). I had the yard include the shifter, slip yoke and clutch fork. I also used a Spicer part # 5-134X to adapt the the 1330 series slip yoke(from 2012 tacoma) to my factory(1310 series) oem drive shaft. I want to also thanK Madtacco461(Mike) for his input. IMG_9605r155swap.jpg IMG_9604R155swap.jpg IMG_9603R155swap.jpg . I will be posting a couple more pics of final install. I will be working on a solution for the left side stiffener plate. I think I will purchase another passenger side stiffener plate. I will be cutting it up and welding it up with the drivers side stiffener plate. I believe the passenger side has the correct bolt spacing.
I will post when I complete the fab. I will say one thing... getting this tranny installed was kinda a bitch. Tight as a frogs ass lol! I had to jack the engine up and down to find the sweet spot and the case still scrapped the pressure plate going in. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I was planning to fab a new cross member, btw- Kevin

See if you can get your hands on 33119-26021, it is the correct stiffener plate for the RZ engine to R transmission bellhousing.
