Hoping to be a part of this thread when the 2nd models of the 3rd gen appear Fall 2016. I'm interested in purchasing a 2017 TRD Off Road, manual transmission. I'm always hesitant to purchase the first model of any new gen so I'm opting to wait. Until then I'm going to glean from this forum.

You probably don't want to hear this, but the '17 model will probably be identical to the '16. Remember Toyota is a 'for profit' company. They will not invest billions of dollars on tooling just to change it after 1 year.

Look at the last gen. Other than the minor refresh in '12. The trucks were basically identical. Add to that, you can bolt on the refreshed front end on the early trucks too.

What we can all hope for is TSB's to address minor issues. That is much much cheaper than re-tooling.

To understand Toyota, you have to think like Toyota.

I'm sure their market research dictated that 99% of Tacoma owners are solo drivers--This Tacoma enthusiast forum matches that theory.. This is not like a Camry where a family may share the car.

I'm sure out of those 99% solo drivers, most of them would not care or pay extra for power seats.

I have been hearing people say they do not want to buy the first year of the new model pretty often on the forum but correct me if I am wrong but the truck for the most part uses much of the same parts as the second gen other than the motor and tranny. I'm not trying to kid myself, a new motor and a new tranny is a huge change but I was under the impression that both the motor and tranny have been used in other vehicles for a number of years already and if my thinking is correct, yes they are new for the Tacoma but they are not new for Toyota. They changed the body a bit but for the most part the bones of that are the same there as well. I ordered a 3rd Gen and owned a 2nd Gen previously and was honestly hoping for more room in the back of the double cab but the interior other than a few new bells and whistles and how they configured the center console and dash is the same. I'm still a little nervous about going with another Tacoma over a full size for the sake of my girls who are both in car seats still. Part of why I dumped my 2nd Gen was due to it getting a little tight back there for my oldest daughter before my second was born. I am typically in the "I won't buy the first model year" camp but with the Tacoma I had no qualms. Compared to most of what's on the road pickup truck wise I am sure the Taco will be the least problematic other than buying a Tundra but I didn't want a second mortgage which is what it would have felt like to get one configured how I would want it. I am with Stan, I highly doubt you will see any changes come '17 other than the introduction of the Pro. Toyota has yet to be in a rush to make major changes to the Tacoma in the past and unless sales plummet, I don't see a major configuration happening in less than 4 years.

Hey I am like you man. Waiting for the 2017 TRD OR Auto Long bed and PT. Will be putting my order in sometime this August. I suspect Toyota will have fixed all of the minor stuff.

I normally repost this when ever I see a "don't want to buy first model of 3rd gen" post.

I borrowed this from 3dBdown post on another thread, I cant take credit for these statistics:

Except the stats just don't show that to be solid reasoning. Two sources --problems per 100 cars. Same basic results with a couple of years being slightly different. 1st year of 1st gen is among the most reliable as is the 1st year of 2nd gen--definitely way better than some later years. 3rd gen --too soon to tell

You would need to wait ~8 years to get a "more" reliable 2nd gen than 1st year.

1st gens are a wash. Pretty dang reliable all around, but later years did trend toward slightly more problems than early years.

Easily worth the risk getting a 1st year though--based on historical statistics/facts. No real reason to wait.

Hoping for 2017 changes? If history is any indication, you'll be lucky if the 2023 model has any improvements over the 2016. Toyota's entire business model relies on convincing loyal customers that they don't want innovation or competitive features, just reliability and resale value.

All of the "issues" (transmission programming, vibration, etc.) will eventually be addressed with TSBs, but 2016 models will also be eligible for these.

Exactly! I'm not expecting any feature improvements in the 2017 model, more TSB and minor issues to tidy up.

I think OP means maybe the 2017 model will have more kinks worked out. He is not hoping for a redesign.

Precisely. Hopefully Toyota will solve the underfilled AT fluid, vibrating hoods, resetting odometers, etc.

I waited for the initial rush to die down to get a better price and to have a truck that was built after thousands of others had been built. More 3rd Gen tacomas were built before mine than the total number of a lot of my other vehicles. Only thing I think 2017 will get you is a TRD PRO and maybe a new color choice.

The thing that sucks about buying a new model year is the windshield.
It's almost always different, unavailable and it cost a 1k dollars.
And it's also most always the first thing that happens to me :/
All else being equal, I'm not afraid of Toyota new models cuz underneath the skin, it's basically the same as the last ten year's model, except for the radio.

As said, unless you want the Pro. That one obviously will have a few new bells and whistles.
I also agree this is definitely not the typical "all new" vehicle. The drivetrain has been developed over at least a few years already in other Toyotas.

I would like to see them add the 6speed option to the dclb. But thats doubtful. That would be an instant seller for me.
