I hate doing it too but I was saving for a new wheel and a swing out wheel carrier as a standard Tacoma wheel cannot be held up in the carrier under the bed. I thought surely the tires could handle being remounted a couple of times so the tread would wear evenly throughout the life of the set.

What do you mean the standard Tacoma wheel cannot be held up in the carrier under the bed? Thats what I'm using and its working fine? 265/75/16 KO2? I hate the location for the winter due to road salt coating EVERYTHING..

The tires can handle it but its kind of frowned upon as extra stress on the bead and potential for damage by retards...

Not the tire size that's fine. The stock Tacoma allow wheel is not held up by metal piece on the carrier hoist now I have not tried it but was told by Toyota that it wouldn't work. I would assume if it fit it would scratch up the alloy wheel anyway.

oh... I have my stock alloy there, I mount it facing up so the chain goes through the wheel through the back and up the front. The 265 makes it a tighter fit for the tire than the 245 did. Aside from road salt I have had no scratching or damage to the wheel from the hoist itself

It would have to be one hell of a pinch if I was ever to go into Walmart and have anything done.

I'll try it that way. I agree it's not my favorite place to keep it but the bed is not an option. Sorry for all the confusion earlier most people don't do the 5 wheel rotation but I like to in case I get a flat on a trail my tread will match. Mathematically speaking I should get slightly more miles out of the set too.

I can't even imagine how a sidewall would have damage like that in a tire mount/balance, much less in a simple rotation.

My suspicion is that's road (or off road) damage from banging on stuff when mounted under the truck. Not from the truck itself, but from the terrain. I mean that is the 'down' side when mounted, correct?

No that tire was not damageg previously. Long story short I do a 5 tire rotation and when they mounted this one back on the spare rim it got damaged. Those are tool marks. As stated previously if it was road wear the white exposed by the tools would be dull not bright.

    I understand now.

To me a 5 tire rotation does not include 2 dismounts/mounts/balancing. The 5th is already on the correct wheel and you just include it in the rotation.

In the long haul it's a lot cheaper to have that 5th matching wheel.

Well, they have a new tire coming for you, so that's good.

Find a matching spare wheel. Single 2nd Gen sport/offroad/sr5 alloys go for <40$, and can indeed be kept in the spare location.

I do 5 tire rotations as well but I purchased a 5 wheel to do it before I started the rotations though. That 5th wheel became a little more of a priority now. They are for sale on here alot but not everyone is willing to part just one wheel

I agree,I think Walmart messed up,but the O.P needs too learn from this event and never go too Walmart again for any type of service..Walmart sucks for a reason.

My dad is a cheapskate when it comes to tires and mounting...learned his lesson last time when they busted one of his TPMS sensors. Snapped it in half. I will give them credit though, he came back and told them about it and Walmart covered it/reimbursed his dealer receipt in full.

Sadly enough for the area I live in the oil and lube places are worse than Walmart. This time around I did not have much in the way of options to get a rotation and balance etc.

I think it was going to be an extra spare, so it would be only used in a very rare situation. If she ever needed a spare for whatever reason then her "first" spare would be used and it does not have any problems (to my knowledge). Then if she needed another one, the gouged would be used, but of course it would just be until its replaced.

So my guess is instead of throwing it away, keep it for an emergency situation...
