Want to plan an elk hunt, need help

So I've hunted my whole life and have always wanted to go out west to hunt elk but never had the money and time. Now that I have some money saved up for this, me and a buddy have been talking about going. The biggest challenge is to find out where to go to find a good location to hunt. Me and my buddy are big bow hunters so we would go for archery season. I've been looking at Colorado but I'm not sure where a good part of the state is to go to that is not over run by hunters. We've been talking about this trip and have decided not to use a guide because it wouldn't feel as rewarding as finding elk on our own and it would save a butt load of money. So if someone could point me in good zone to hunt would help a ton.
