Mileage is only slightly better with the 4cyl...

I'd keep this one...you'd take more of a hit than its worth trading it in, IMO.

Keep it you won't get much better mileage and its a truck not a Prius so drive carefully and make sure you know when to shift the gears

    what he said.

You will most likely regret getting the 4cyl.

Yeah...given what you drive OP, you're looking at saving $200/year in gas by loosing thousands on a trade in...

Even if it was only a $2000 loss, that's ten years of ownership to make the trade worth it...then there's difference in depreciation between the two and whatnot...

That's my outlook...just do what makes you happiest...YOLO!!!!

I've had 15 different Toyota 4x4's in the last 20 or so years. And the first second gen tacoma I bought was a 4 cylinder extended cab. If I didn't have a kid 2 years into owning it I would probably still be driving it. But dealing with a car seat in an extended cab sucked. Just not enough space. But I got an honest 24mpg highway with it and had it for a little over 100k miles. Power was adequate but if I had modded it all I would have been disappointed I'm sure. It's not bad, but it's no powerhouse. Forget passing uphill. I never towed with it either. Once I got a double cab I liked it a lot more. Far more power, way more room, more solid feeling cab, and really the mileage (with an auto) wasn't all that much different. I actually went back to a first gen extracab for about 8 months due to some financial challenges. Great little truck but I couldn't wait for another double cab. Now I've got one again and besides the puny 245's and hubcaps I love it. But I will admit I miss shifting for myself and I really like the 5 speed behind the 4cyl a lot more than the six speed behind the V6.

    Don't count on better MPG.

I am a lead foot and get the same with my V6 that I got on the 4banger 15-16MPG.

Get a DCLB OP... Have the longer bed and double cab. My buddy has the manual 4cyl access cab. Sweet truck but too underpowered. Tough to pass and if your looking for a little bigger bed I assume you'll be using it for stuff to haul. You'll want the 6 hauling even the lightest loads...

What do you mean by simpler?

Keep the truck you have. It's value will be higher down the road and you have a really sweet truck. I think you will be disappointed with the I4 and the marginal gain in MPG.

Maybe you are trying to get away from the payment? In that case you have to do what ya gotta do but I highly doubt you will see the return you seek.

If you want a simpler truck then by all means go for it but I would not do it. It's up to you bud.

New redesign should be here sometime early next year as a 2014 or in the fall as a 2015 with new engines and transmissions that should get better MPGs. I have a 2012 and love it but I will get the redesign when it come out because I like to trade every two or three years. You might kick yourself in the butt if you get a 2013 now and a redesign comes out in January that you like better.

Yes isn't that when the V8 turbo diesel will come standard with the 7 speed paddle shift auto trans?? Thats cool. And to boot the engine will get 40 MPG and have 350 HP. Sweet.

I had a 2011 4cyl 5spd access cab 4x4 and traded for my 2012 acc cab TRD off road 4x4. Look at my fuelly info. I only get about 1 less mpg in my 12 v6 vs my 11 4 cyl.

Hang onto the 2012 , the savings would be so minimal compared to what you'd lose .

Buy a scan gauge and narrow tires lol

in hindsight a dblcab/sport might have been better.. we bought this for extreme camping but thats not happening
at the time we had 3lrg dogs now we are down to one and she does not like the height (old female german shep if she want to (barely)ride in the mercedes thats her call)
did they make a trd/offroad in longbed /accescab? 5sd/6spd/ man auto?
    that would be doable
we did drive an i4 4x4 and it seemed to have a gap between 2 of the lower gears

i just use this truck mostly for hauling dirtbikes and the older lower 6ft bed trucks worked fine for that
maybe i need to build a haul box out of wood to gimmie some more room

and no i have not talked to any dealer yet

just to clarify when i think 14 5spd i am thinking 96-2003 and only one owned by someone serious about maintenance
i guess i could trade for a 2012trd/offrd access cab and get the 6ft bed and be ok with that.
ideally i'm looking for someone who is popping kids as fast as my big dogs are signing off
and NO there were never a lot of dogs in the truck.
i know the one trip we did to madrone (north of the lost coast) we had the seats pulled down and quilted everything so no dog smell at all
or next dog is gonna be under 40lbs so an access cab will be fine
i am pretty sure the trd has the airbag off feature which is important for kids.
and that second row of seats is needed for fam's as well
