I've been considering several options for roof racks, bed racks, tonneau covers and even looking into the possibility of a camper shell. I've got a TRD OR DCSB, so sleeping in a shell is a no-go. Here are my requirements:

    - Keep gear secure and (mostly) dry in the bed.
    - Ability to transport a canoe.
    - Carry and use an RTT. I would prefer to keep it over the bed, below the roofline for better MPG on long trips.

I don't need to transport the canoe and the RTT at the same time.

The best option I can find is the Pace Edwards with Explorer Series rails. These rails have T-slots on the sides that accept Thule/other rack equipment. That would allow me to put some sort of foot and crossbars on for the RTT, then replace those with an over-the-bed rack for canoe transport. The downside is that the Pace Edwards models are pushing about 2 grand. Seems a bit steep, though I'd be interested to hear others' experience on their quality and reliability. I'm willing to pay if it's the right fit.

I've also considered building a platform/cover with some sort of t-slot system on top. I figure I could fab a frame, put a seal on the lower lip where it contacts the bed rails, cover it with marine grade plywood, then roll on some black rubber roofing membrane and let it drape over the side a half inch or so for more weather protection. Basically a DIY hard tonneau with a rail system on top. I know, time is money, but I figure I can get exactly what I need for several hundred dollars vs a couple thousand. I'm confident it would look "good enough" while in use. Plus it would stow away rather easily in the garage when not in use. Somebody please talk me out of this option!

Any body have similar requirements? What did you do? Am I missing other options out there?

Thanks for any advice you guys can give!

    Mostly stuff I built.

All-Pro will build these racks to any height you want. I know you stated you don't need to have tent on and haul canoe but with the addition if the factory roof rack and this bed rack built in a lower configuration this could be possible. I am a kayaker and am thinking about this setup for mine. As for keeping your gear dry you could have a canvas or vinyl top made to suit the bed rack.

Get an All-pro rack that a canvas soft topper can fit under maybe?
