30k just seems too much to spend on a truck for after market parts.
Is there anyone who has spent more money on after market parts in here, than their truck is worth?

    Good fortune :D
I'm a full time student in an out of high school med program at texas tech. I take core, nursing, and med classes. Dad gave me money when I turned 13 to invest and gave me tips, hes very smart with money. My mother passed all of her worth to me when I turned 18. She is a neurologist, my father supports our family. He is an OBGYN and has practiced for 28 years never having had taken a vacation. He is currently working on humanitiesuniversity.org and literatureinstitute.org (beginning stages, websites havent been updated at all almost. We have redone them completely and hired new professors/developed more course work). I also help with his resale online.
    Awesome :)

Id like to hopefully keep the same engine :)

EDIT: Nvm! Wtf... http://www.sdparts.com/product/19166454/LSXBlockBowtieBare.aspx .. is this right!? I was assuming engiens were like half the price of the effing car. Alright, so what in everyones opinion is the way to get the most horsepower out of my truck PERIOD under these conditions:

Still looks like a tacoma on the outside.
    Cab isnt compromised.
    Street legal.

Nothing else. Forget the budget. Im sure keeping it street legal keeps the budget down anyway. Ill work on whatever is needed... Hopefully we can make this a discussion! FIrst things first.

Which engine block do I pick. I want the best one in terms of not only power, but reliability.

EVERYBODY, I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

Holy crap... the more I research, the more potential I see. If I have to alter my hood quite a bit that's fine xD.

The LSX is $1,999. Since all the other parts will add up quickly... can anyone think of a better engine for under 5k, and under 10k?

I wias I could help but i dont know jack about this stuff. I say you take it to a performance shop, tell them what you would like it to run in the quarter mile and get a price of everything.

That actually increase cost dramatically because you're dealing with emissions. The cheapest option is usually to start with a stripped down vehicle and build from there. Or if you're looking for real power you start with your rear wheels, tires, and an engine and build everything around that.

Street legal costs more. I could have saved probably $10,000 on my build if I scrapped all the comfort and cosmetic stuff and went for a strictly off-road vehicle, but what fun is that?

The thing is, for the horsepower you are wanting (more than 300-500) the engine is not the only thing needing to be replaced. I am sure it can be done, somewhere. That is not the issue. You may be better off getting an older high mileage truck for cheap and strippin the hell out of it and building the way you want. Again as mentioned before reliability would concern me. That and the gas you would be sucking to get a 500+ hp truck moving. I thought that the URD systems were advertising 430ish? For our trucks that will move you and quickly.

I say get rid of the 1gr for something else because, if you want reliability in this motor, and over 400hp, your going to want to do internals, which will add another 4k easy ontop of all other parts. The tranny will not hold that abuse either,we all know the 6spd in the 2nd gen taco is garbage.

When I typed LSx, i was referring to any LS based engine from GM, LS1, LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7. LS9. The LSX itself is becoming a monster in the drag industry, and will start adding up fast.

There is already a company who sells the parts for the swap of a LS1/LS6 motor in the engine bay of a 2nd gen taco. Mate that with either a T56 6spd, or a built automagic, and youll have one hell of a starting point for a great street truck. There price of the motor, mild workover, and tranny will be about the same if not less than throwing on a supercharger or turbo with internals on the 1gr. Youll be in a better position for future modding and power as well.
