Howzit guys, I’m looking into moving to southern Utah from Hawaii within the next year or so, and I thought it’d be perfect to ask here what kind of fun trails and other stuff I could expect.

I’m still doing research but I’m interested in the st George area, any other advice with vehicle registration, areas to avoid, areas to definitely see I’m all ears

possibly any tips for job market or better suggestions into what I’m looking for, been wanting to get my CDL to stay local home every night thing. I’m a mechanic equipment operator here in HI on farms, but honestly interested in anything I can wrench on or operate . I’ve been checking jobs out but I’m more curious as to what it’s like there as here in HI it’s very who do you know type deal. 88ED0C36-3C7E-460C-80CB-1E6AEDF60274.jpg7D49724D-5A07-4091-BA4D-6E7C6FD30FE1.jpg

Be prepared for miserable heat - especially coming from Hawaii:

Lotta good stuff around STG. There's rec areas like Sand Hollow, then many more miles of open trails in the miles around. Lots of non-vehicle outdoor recreation as well. Mountain biking, hiking, etc.

Vehicle registration ain't no thing as long as your truck can pass basic emissions, so unless you cat deleted it or something, you're golden. No safety inspections anymore.

Downside: May to Late Sept is mind numbingly hot during the day. Yes, "it's a dry heat" but after a certain point, hot is just hot no matter what. Not quite Vegas/Phoenix levels, but close.

Vehicle registration here is pretty killer, pay about 500 a year to register, then a safety check and if you’re any type of modification you need recon as well.

I’m planning on taking a trip out there this summer to check out how bad the heat really is, hottest it gets here is maybe 90° but 90% humidity

Here the fee is pretty reasonable compared to the likes of HI, CA, etc. Its based on age and even with a smog test, etc should come in less than $200. Your truck is coming on 9 years old if its a 2012 so I think its about to drop down a tier on the reg fee too.

The heat is def gonna feel better than HI. I travel to the Caribbean a fair bit with similar climate to HI and its always a harsh welcome stepping off the jet in the Caymans. That said, the sun feels WAY more intense here in the southwest for whatever reason. Prepare for nosebleeds for a while too since its like 10% humidity.

There's a lot of "who-do-you-know" in Utah, too. Or rather... which church do you attend?
Southern Utah moreso than north. Maybe you already know that? It's pretty interesting when you go in to a job interview and the first question is, "What ward are you in?" And then they offer you a salary based on the answer.

    Thank you for that link!

that registration cost already is way better.

I’m not super worried about the heat, I live on the hot side of the island where we rarely get rain it’s all sun and hot all the time.

oh yeah my truck is coming with, no exhaust changes just other modifications, I plan to drive it from Cali to Utah instead of having it delivered

I was aware of the heavy religion there but wasn’t aware of it in that sense, pretty interesting

The church influence isnt AS BAD as a lot of folks make it sound, but there is a lot of social type connection that we outsiders miss out on.

Honestly, coming from VA, Utah religious politics hasn't had any meaningful effect on my life. Virginia has ABC stores just like Utah has state liquor stores, only real exception being that you could buy wine in VA grocery stores. I'm not a wine drinker so meh. It is nice to have 5% beer common now, but we had enough good 3.2 options brewed locally that I didn't really care about that either.

The whole licensed as a bar vs restaurant thing is prob the most annoying thing but only cuz Bohemian Brewery is our company stammtisch spot and for some reason its classed as a restaurant o_O

I tried to find your post about that question you had concerning cops/tickets, but no bueno...
BUT, if you live in the SLC metroplex, Pretty much Spanish Fork north through Bountiful, there aren't enough officers in the world to catch all the speeders. I think that is the mentality many drivers have and they figure that when they see someone ticketed that means there aren't any police to give them one... so HAMMER DOWN!!!
Speed limit through Orem/Provo is 70 on a freeway with six lanes going one way, and if you are doing 80 most people are keeping up or passing you. And then there are the traffic jams.
South of the big city the Highway patrol gets thick at times. The locals take driving infractions seriously if they don't know you. But I doubt there is a town in Utah that tickets unlicensed ATV riders on the streets.

Construction and transportation are booming. Everyone’s short-handed. You shouldn’t have any problems finding work. Don’t worry about the religion thing, it’s a non-issue in the trades. I’ve lived in Utah my whole life and never had it come up in a job interview.

Oh that’s perfect! Glad it isn’t an issue in trades. That’s what I kinda figured that it was more of the office type small business stuff
