Is it normal for my truck to take forever to warm up when it’s cold? I live in update Ny. I can start my truck in the garage and let it run for 15-20 mins and it’s seems like the temp doesn’t move much. It’s a little faster to warm up while driving.

Sounds like a good way to die from CO poisoning. I just get in start it and drive, warms up pretty quick.

Mine started up instantly at -32 at 5:30 this morning. I have remote start, heat turned up and let it run for 15 mins. Yeah, still cold complete with stiff seats. I live in the NEK of Vermont.

I’m sure he opened his garage! Mine was outside. My guess is they all take a looong time to warm up in extreme cold.

Takes a while and sounds kinda rough on start up. Wouldn't worry with it. After 5 mins of idle it's usually safe to drive

Mine lives outside also, too many toys in the garage. I don’t believe it’s hard on anything to start it and drive. I’ve always done that and had an explorer outlast my desire to keep it. I take it easy on the gas until it’s warm, but I’m at operating temp and have heat within about 3 miles (5 mins) driving.

My 2021 also takes ages to warm up at idle. Remote start isn’t going to give you a cozy cabin on a cold morning in my experience, and that’s even just PNW cold. Warms up quick once you get driving.

Yep, have mine 6 winters now and takes longer to warm up than our other two vehicles. Not a big deal though, mine parks outside in driveway, I let it idle for 10 min or until windshield defrosts and drive. Warms up quicker in 5 min of driving than 20 min of idle...

You could always get your thermostat replaced or at least checked to make sure it is opening at the proper temp.

With these newer FI engines, its "better" to not let it idle for too long, but with that said, i have a remote starter so i usually start it for about 2-5 mins before i plan to leave in the cold winter mornings and let the oil temp warm a bit and i take it easy for the first few mins until temps warm up a bit

    Yep.
I only let my 3G run until it "steps down" off the highest idle speed (maybe 20-30 sec), then go. I take it easy until the temp gauge starts coming up.
The heated seats are up on lava setting as soon as I start it though lol.

That's one of the reasons I moved from Johnson to south Florida. Problem solved lol. I don't miss that or mud season.

I use remote start on cold morning but before shutting truck down, I always have the heat setting, fan on high and the system on auto. Warms up nicely, defogs all windows and ready to go. Yeah it is different from any other 1- 2 Generation Tacoma that I have owned.

I will idle mine for maybe 4-5 minutes start slow for a 1/2 mile or so, when it's really cold I will start it Waite for the warning screen to end move the gear shift from park to drive, neutral and reverse a couple times to get the fluid moving in the transmission before I start out. Always remember that wind chill temperatures really only affect skin they do not have any significant impact on automobiles and components. I believe the problem with slow warm up on just idle is the systems need to heat up from use. My truck and my wife's Hyundai warms up faster while driving.

There is allegedly an electric heater component that is supposed to give you warmer air for defrost sooner, I’ve never really noticed it personally. If it’s 0F outside the air coming out of the vents is real cold until I drive a few miles.

There is, and it does.. kinda.
Not sure if it's there in all trim levels.

The odds of the thermostat being a problem are really low.

Modern engines are designed for maximum efficiency with minimum internal friction, the engine is doing virtually no work idling. No work = no heat.

Once the engine has been running for 60 seconds the oil has circulated to where it is needed, after that driving at a low to moderate speed will result in the quickest warm up.

This is normal for all engines. At idle cylinder pressures are low and the combustion is cooler. These engines are very good at shedding heat as well. If it is colder, I have seen the engine start to cool down at idle. Start it up, give it a second or 2 for oil to circulate and start driving. You won't damage anything.

Yes. Owned my '21 TRD Off-Road for two winters now. Doesn't seem to matter if it's 40 or 20F outside. I usually let it warm up for about 15mins then take it easy until the temp starts coming up.

That's all I do on really cold days, except I back it out of the garage first. :D :turtleride:
