My M8000 quit working mid pull, had been using it a lot winching a fallen tree and it just "died", no noise from the motor etc, gonna pull the bumper off the truck to get a better look at it.

Is it most likely the motor, solenoids, or winch controller that are faulty? The winch is 5 years old and has been used maybe 10 times

What should I be looking for when taking it apart?

Check your ground connection. I had the same problem on my previous truck with warn M9000. Ground connection was loose/dirty.

Definitely going to check the ground, that would be amazing if that was the problem, my cable has been wrapped around my ARB hoops for 4 months...

quick update for those with the same problem - @trdNick your advice saved me hours and hours of work. unhooked the ground from the negative side of the battery, took some steel wool and roughed it and the terminal up, wire it back up, boom, winch works.

So word to the wise, always check your grounds before you go tearing apart your front end
