I was with my friend when he got pulled over on checkpoint #18 i believe.
It was at night and they didn't have any signs, but they did have a cop with his lights on in the median and had at least 4 units underneath the bridge. He exited because he was speeding and instinctively turned off his lights and went down the road a ways. One of those cars followed us and did the whole "why did you exit and turn off your lights" conversation. He didn't get a ticket or anything but we later found out that it was a rouse to find drug traffickers

I've experienced this same type thing here in GA along I-16 (Danville)... just so happened I was getting off the exit they were set up at. The officers were polite, asked for my drivers license/registration, did a visual inspection of the inside of my vehicle, and their dog on a leash near my vehicle didn't light on anything so the officer wished me a safe ride home. This has happened twice and neither time did I have a problem with it... of course I didn't have anything to hide.

Are we supposed to accept non violent crimes? So people can do identity theft, burglaries, and shoplifting becasue those are non violent? How about tax evasion, insurance fraud, prostitiution, ditributing child porn, etc. Those are all non violent as well.

I hate people who are criminals and believe that the level of criminal activity they engage in is "OK" but people who do things differntly are the bad ones instead of accepting they are criminals themselves. As stated the MONEY goes to drug cartels who kill people. Just like prohibition on alcohol fed money to the gangsters. Do I think marijuana is a horrible crime? No... I have let people go with small amounts of weed and charged them if they needed to go to jail too. I also arrest people who have large amounts or are drug dealers. If you are not comfortable with the stigma a Class B misdemeanor gives you for getting caught with a personal supply of marijuana perhaps you should consider not smoking it. Just like speeders who dont like traffic tickets should consider not speeding. Just like bank robbers who dont want to spnd 20 years in prison should probably not steal from a bank.

whoa im not even worried about all that. all i was tryin to say was cops are always dicks to me and i dont think they should just be able to pull everyone over and search there shit. at least not if there is no real probable cause. i dont do/transport/participate in anything illegal. im just saying to dont agree with invasion of person privacy/freedom

and from what i have been hearing the border patrol is drastically under powered. not that they dont do work. im all for it. i want more security on the border

Your friend exited and turned off his lights? Fucking brilliant, pretty sure fleeing and evading (running with no lights to avoid the police) is illegal. Even if that act doesn't fit that crime, it's pretty shady and just asking for trouble.

These are all things with victims (well except maybe for prostitution, though as long as it too is kept underground, it will remain controlled by criminals and rife with abuse).

But please don't try to lump responsible personal use of cannabis in with this. Responsible users buy local from known growers. They don't buy from cartels. On the contrary, it is the growing local market that is undermining the cartels while it is prohibitionism that continues to drive prices sky high and encourage continued criminal activity. For God's sake, people, it's a dried plant. Get over it.

    of course
OK, I agree it is good to catch people who are doing illegal things. But by allowing searches of everyone without a reason is a clear infringement on their right to lead a free life. It is not illegal to drive down the road and I take it personal when I am stopped without reason. I am a law abiding citizen and should not have my life stopped and turned over because I decided to go for a ride in a "free" country. Read the book, 1984, that may help you understand. No thanks people, every right you give up leads to less freedom.

I understand you want all your freedom, but would you rather they let the drug lords run free, and have your children run into them one day? maybe end up working for them?

if your a normal person on a normal drive, you'd have nothing to worry about, so you can continue on, especially since the main road was not stopped... the thing is, they didn't stop traffic on a busy interstate, they tricked the drug dealers into driving into a check site.. I say, nice work popo!

I think most people tend to forget the "bigger problems" stem from the "small ones" that some people here are defending.

I don't smoke...I don't do any type of drugs. I think this is ridiculous. I don't want to be stopped on any roadway for no reason at all...this seems like it would just cause a huge traffic jam.

I am all for taking on those risks in return for my freedoms...lets keep it American. Additionally, it does not seem to me like making exceptions to the 4th amendment by forcing tax paying citizens into unconstitutional searches and seizures is doing any good any way, as there are still drug lords running free.

Don't like America and its constitution, than move to a different country.

Complete overreach. These kind of checkpoints have nothing to do with stopping "drug lords". They are neo-prohibitionist ideology run amok, plain and simple. The same people who dropped BAC from .15 to .12 to .10 to .08 (and they are working on going lower) based not on science, but on a worldview. We have very serious drug problems in this country. No argument there. But this is not the way to approach them. They're largely ineffective and a waste of precious taxpayer dollars.
