My wife took my 2013 sport 4x4 in for its free 10K service a couple weeks ago. I told them to look at the rotors when I made the appointment, because I was getting an annoying shake when braking. It turns out that my front rotors and rear drums where both warped. They machined all of them when she had it in there under warranty. If I would have been there I would have asked about replacing them, but I was out of town. It doesn’t shake all the time, but it still does some. Has anyone else had problems with the oem rotors/drums getting warped so soon? I do mostly highway driving, so I don’t use my brakes a lot. I occasionally pull an atv trailer or flat bottom boat, but nothing that even comes close to working the brakes out. They starting shaking between 5k and 10k miles. Will they replace these under warranty? Or should I just put aftermarket rotors/drums on if the oem are bad? I haven’t found others really complaining about it on here. The warranty / maintanence book talks about brake pads not being covered under warranty, but it does not talk about rotors or drums. I was just looking for feedback before I called the dealership. Thanks

My truck shuddered at around 10k too. At about 75k I had to replace my front brake pads and ordered Brembo blanks instead of resurfacing the stock rotors. I tested my stock rotors (by braking) before replacing them and there was no more shuddering. I had never noticed that it had stopped but it appeared to have fixed itself in those 65k

Oh great... my 2004 had horrible brakes. If my new truck starts with the brake problems at 10k miles I will not be happy. What is up with Toyota and their brakes?

My wife's 06 4 runner's brakes are smooth as can be. I didn't even change the front pads until 100k and they still had close to 50% of the pads remaining.

I'm coming up on 35,000 and haven't had any issues. I bought the truck at 14,000 and as far as I know the pads and rotors are all original so it's not a definite that you'll have issues.

This does it though, at least im my experience. The rotors just heat up too much when towing. Changed both the rotors and pads out and all is good. Resurfacing rotors is a waste of time/money in my book.

I bought the PowerStop kit and so far I'm liking it. I have about 20k on the powerstop pads and rotors and no complaints so far.

I had to replace my rotors at 12,000 mi. It was very odd that I had only minor shaking but when we tried to cut them they were warped too bad to cut. I think this is the new fad with automakers to put the cheapest parts possible on their new vehicles. Tires rotors brakes everything. Not only Toyota but Ford Chevy Dodge. I have heard lots of complaints.

I have a 13 also. When I went in on my first maintenance I explained that I was getting vibrations and they had to re surface them at 4800 miles. I was not to happy. I now have 10k on it and it has been good since they did it.

U got to take into consideration driving habits, terrain, weather and everything else for that matter. I live in CO, drive in the mtns, traffic, from clear roads in Denver to ice/slush in mtns then back, warping will happen quickly w/out careful driving or better all around quality breaks.

Personally going to invest in drilled n slotted rotors and good ceramic pads. It worked on my 97 4runner w/3" n 33's stopped great no warpage and hadn't changed pads!!

Thanks for the information. I'm going to take the truck back, but will look into the power stop kits.

This is only my opinion, but it seems Hugh Morron may share this opinion:

I believe that in the interest of keeping costs and vehicle weight down, manufacturers are specifying the absolute minimum for brakes, meaning that while braking effectiveness and longevity would be greatly improved by using larger rotors/calipers and/or better pads, we won't get that unless we install them ourselves.

You may have noticed that there's a very large aftermarket for improved brakes because there's a big demand. Lots of folks just aren't pleased with the crappy brakes that originally come on our vehicles, with good reason. Poor braking performance combined with shuddering and vibrating send people to the aftermarket when our dealers can't fix the problems.

All three of our Toyota-made vehicles (the Taco & 2 Lexus) have shuddering when braking AND all three have been "fixed" by the appropriate dealers, but the shuddering always returns.

This issue with poor brake performance is not limited to Toyota--it is a virtual epidemic in the auto industry. Of course, keeping costs and weight down sure isn't limited to brakes. Cost & weight trimming/pruning is applied to the entire vehicle. Brakes are one of the first things we notice though.

To make matters worse, manufacturers must design and use a set of brakes that will work with all the different wheel sizes they offer. This means that while we could get larger rotors/calipers for 17" or 18" wheels, we're stuck with smaller brakes that fit 15" or 16" wheels as that's what comes on the cheapest versions of our trucks.

I have had a lot of issues with this. Its always the drums though. I'd like to know a good aftermarket solution because they go out-of-round within a few thousand miles every time.

I've got 24,500 on my 2012 and it just started showing signs of this about 750 miles ago. Been meaning to post about it but haven't had time. Thanks OP!

My '12 started at 20K with a vibration while braking. Took it to the dealer and they turned the rotors and installed new pads. While there the SA asked me if my rear brakes were squealing. Yes, right when it comes to a stop. They said a new TSB just came down for new drums and shoes. Truck rides super smooth now.

I've owned 5 other Toyota trucks with an '83 being my first one. I NEVER had a rotor turned with any other truck, even with over 250K miles on it.
