    Hey folks!

I bought my '17 OR last year and the fella who originally owned it had purchased the extended warranty (120K KM/ 7 years). I'm glad he did because I had to get two wheel bearings replaced when I took possession! With that being said, I'm at the 119K KM mark and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on if I should take it in for any specific type of inspection before the warranty is up? Any typical problem areas for these rigs at this age/ mileage?

    Pic for attention :)

    Thanks in advance!

    Nice Taco.

No comment on the warranty, since I don't have one, nor ever bought one.

Look for the timing cover oil leak.
Look for rear main seal oil leak.
Look for coolant bypass tube oil leak.

When my wife’s warranty on her SUV was almost up I took it to the dealership and asked them to thoroughly inspect it for any issues that might be covered. Didnt uncover anything but they did do it.

Depends on the dealer, some dealer techs hate doing any form of warranty work.

Some jobs like the timing cover leak pay piss all, and can sway a tech to ignore it.

    Work in progress...
I told my wife, after 34 years, I was going to trade her in on a 24. She said," I was thinking of doing the same." Then she said something about 24 going into 60 than 60 going into 24?

They are pretty reliable vehicles. I would probably self insure.

Yep take skids off and check for leaks. Took mine off a few weeks ago trying to find a suspension noise and found my rear main was leaking. Had 2k miles left on my extended warranty (2017 with 73k miles) and was able to get it repaired through that.

Say your back up camera (if you have one) is blurry
    :anonymous:

My shop foreman would "discover" that issue on his vehicles right before his warranty expired... all I can say is it's pretty crazy how the camera degrades over time in comparison to new

If it doesn't feel or sound weird and you don't see liquids where there shouldn't be liquid, then there's no problem.

Drive it, enjoy it, build a "self-warranty" savings account for all future things.

typically, a tech would have done a full inspection and upsold as much warranty work as possible while he had it on the lift. This is good for you as the owner because everything he uncovered would have been covered under a single out of pocket deductible for you (usually $0-$100) depending on the terms.

with that being said, you can schedule a 120 point inspection , usually at no charge. As a service writer, I was more than happy to look a truck over and give a laundry list of repairs to the warranty company on behalf of the customer.

you need an original complaint on the Repair Order -

customer complains of oil smell in the vents.

customer noticed class 1 oil leak around pan

customer complained of knocking from suspension when driving over speed bumps

I’m not advising you lie, but do a thorough inspection as our TW friends have stated. If you find a legit crack in a cv boot, this would open the RO for everything they find under your deductible.

Be advised, the service department and the extended warranty company are not friends. They are at odds with each other. If the service advisor breaks over a certain dollar amount, or the warranty adjuster is in a bad mood, he can choose to send an inspector to confirm the claim. This isn’t really a problem for you, just something to be aware of.

    cheers brother

Appreciate the insight, everyone! I'll be taking a good look for any leaks but also scheduled in a Service Level 3, even though that was done at my last service. I'm not the most mechanically savvy guy so $300 for peace of mind seems worthwhile in this scenario.

As far any issues/ complaints, I only have the typical gear hunting to complain about. I had them update the software about 6 months ago (charged me for it), it helped slightly but it still feels a little iffy around the 60-90 km/hour range.

@Haji DontSurf - Not saying I'm going to lie but this is really good insight, better to report something and have them look into it versus hoping they find something.

Managed to take my skid plates off and take a better look underneath. First time doing it, so wasn’t exactly sure what is considered normal but I did notice some oil in a few different spots, as pictured. Any cause for concern?

Take it to the dealer pay for a full inspection of the vehicle.

@Mallcrawler20, I’ve got it booked in for a 160 point inspection and will mention I took the skid plate off and saw this.

@bulalo, can’t tell if there is sarcasm here or not. I’m not the most mechanically inclined but just trying to cover my basis because I’ve read about the timing cover and rear main seal leaks being common on 3rd gens.

Not sarcasm but that’s what’s mostly it will cost to repair when out of warranty . Better have it checked before warranty runs out

Much appreciated. So you’re saying this isn’t normal and there IS cause for concern?

This thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Tacomaworld/s/YesVyNVqap) makes it look like it could be the timing cover.
