    Hello TW,

Anyone have experience with warranty service being denied because scheduled maintenance was missed?

I bought a Tacoma OR back in September, 2022. 9 months later I've got ~3700 miles on the odo. Drove home from an out of state dealership 2,200 miles away so I've put on about 1,500 local miles and I probably drive it even less now that the "newness" is wearing off but I still enjoy the heck out of that truck.

The nearest Toyota dealership isn't local and and their service bay is always packed so I wasn't in a rush to take it in for the 6 month service appt. I finally talked to a service advisor about the 6 month appt and mentioned that I am at 3,800 miles and will probably not be at 5,000 at the 1 year mark. He said the 6 month appt is a tire rotation and fluid check and would be a waste of my time (he knows how far away I am from their dealership). I asked if not getting the 6 month service appointment would void my warranty and he said 'no'. I have different wheels and tires now so I don't need the rotation and he said the fluid checks are under the hood only. It's not like they are going to check the differential.

This service advisor took care of my brake issues when the truck was new after the first dealership I went to didn't fix the problem so I don't think he's telling me anything wrong but who knows.

Im not sure what your question is. Generally a warranty covers manufacturing and assembly defects. It’s not an insurance policy. Wear items like brake shoes and clutch plates are not usually covered.

You are not required to do your PMs at the dealership.

I’m sure “neglect” could be used to void a warranty issue. But they’d need to prove the neglect lead to the failure.

I am not a lawyer. Don’t take my advice.

As an example, if you never change your oil and the engine blows the warranty repairs will probably be denied. If you change your own oil and have records of doing it then you’ll likely not have any problems.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just worried about needing warranty service in the future for something that is covered but Toyota giving me hassles about missing the 6 month check. Maybe nothing to worry about given what little they do in that check anyway.

Only will be an issue if the warranty problem is caused by a pack of maintenance. Typically noon maintenance failures are obvious without even checking the history.

    No need to worry.

It isn't a big deal, just pay attention to the job and make sure you have a good filter wrench, many here have the Motivx one.
