I got to thinking the other day about warranty work....

I've had several things done to my tacoma (currently 15K miles) under warranty such as the add a leaf, the transmission TSB, and most recently replaced radio.

Has anyone ever requested the warranty start fresh at the time each of these parts was installed? For example: my radio would be under warranty until 51K miles (with a fresh 36K mile warranty).

Good luck with that one... I understand where you're going with this and really wished it worked that way but sadly it doesn't.

It'd be a lot cooler if it did :D

If it was something that had more mechanical pieces to it such as a braking system, then I think I would definitely give it a shot. I guess I'll let it be for now because you know....going to battle with the dealer is so much fun

I tried this recently with a leaf pack. They replaced my leaf pack at 10,000 miles with the TSB pack and I've not flattened them out at 45,000 miles. Basically I was told because they already did the TSB there was nothing more they could do. But, I'm sure you see why they don't do warrantees like that, they'd be perpetually replacing parts upwards of 100,000 miles.

You paid for for X amount of coverage (36K miles in this case) and got free parts during that time. You didn't pay more for more coverage. If you want more coverage- pay for the extended warranty.

It would depend on the dealership and your persistace to pursue it.

When I bought my truck, I forced them to remove their stupid dealer tag from the front bumper. They repaired and repainted it. We made damn sure - in writing - the paint job would be covered (fading) long after the 3/36. We actually requested 5/60. About a year ago, the paint repair started to bubble up/off. It was re-done. But again, were still good for 5/60.

Another 5/60 from the second paint job ?

It wasn't necessarily another (or new) paint job. It was a repair to the first one. If you add another 5/60K miles to that, the truck will be 10 years old and by that time....the bumper will probably look better than the rest of the truck!!

I'm just thinking about protecting myself against a part that is redundantly defective.

Example: I've already spotted rust on my chromed bumper which was 8 months old at the time. If I get a new chromed bumper from Toyota, I don't want another one that will rust out in no time after my warranty is shot.

I understand that...but you aren't paying more for that extra coverage. They'll replace the parts for the term that you agreed to...That's the way business works. If you want longer coverage- You gotta pay for it.
