New member, first post. I bought my first Toyota truck in 1981. 22R engine, no air, manual windows, locks, steering, 4 speed stick. Bare bones even by 1981 standards. I have subsequently owned an 87, 91 and 97. All were great trucks, and all had manual transmissions.

I have been driving an inherited 98 Chevy for a while now, but now it’s time for a new Toyota...or so I thought. I went online and discovered that apparently it is now impossible to buy a 4x4 Tacoma with a 4 cylinder engine and a manual transmission. In fact, they only offer a manual in a couple of versions of the hideous double cab, and only with a 6 cyl.

Dammit. Guess I won’t be buying a new Toyota. How many years do I have to go back to find a used 4x4 manual with a 4 cylinder?

2017 was last year of that.

You can still get an access cab sport v6 4x4 with manual too

You do not want a 4cyl. Worse fuel economy and much worse performace.

Go drive both and you will see

As stated above, the last 4 cylinder 5 speed access cab trucks were made in 2017.

Good luck finding a manual in the other makes. Had to give up my 09 access cab 5 speed 4 cylinder, for the DCSB sport to fit the family. Start searching for a 17.

Real world numbers beg to differ on fuel economy. Fuelly shows ~20-21 mpg average on the 4 cyl, 19 mpg average on the 6. That said, you’re right on us being slow, we’ll get there eventually. But we’ll run forever :-D

Unfortunately, the truck you want, is not what is keeping Toyota in business. We gotta give them credit for knowing the market. They are sellling more trucks than they ever have.

Surprisingly, they outperform Tacoma World in judging what sells. If it was left to TW, they’d be trying to flog Long bed, regular cab, diesels with bare-bones manual hubs and 5-speed manual transmissions, but also disc brakes, apple CarPlay and LED everything. They’d sell a few to the TW members that truly want that, then close up shop.

Good luck in your search for that truck you seek.

Not a single company makes a base truck with a stick and 4x4 in 2019. Welcome to the 21st century. Nobody even makes a 1/4 ton regular cab anymore.

You should definitely go test drive a 6MT. Ok, you can't, because there aren't any on dealer lots. But maybe a local will let you peek in the window?

The wheel base for third gen manuals is the dcsb or the aclb, you can find either if you look hard enough I'm sure. For the specific truck I wanted, I had to fly to Tuscon to get it. It was worth it.
