My old 2.7 5 spd defiantly was less than a blazing performer but I was bullet proof still ran great with zero engine issues at 300K I prefer the 4L in general over the 2.7 the power difference is pretty dramatic.

LOL, I came directly from a 1991 4 cylinder, 5-speed XtraCab to my 2008 V6 6-speed ACLB and regret making that move all the time.

It was slow, there's no argument on that, though. But I miss just about everything else about it.

I considered trying to find a 2nd gen 4 cylinder but having a low mile one with a solid frame seemed smarter to hang on to while I look for a decent 89-91 like I had that isn't beat stupid to go back to.

You would expect that trucks and sports cars are where you can still get a stick. I had an 84 Toyota 4x4 MT but now that I’m old I like the AT because every time I used the clutch my ankle would pop. Sucks getting old!

That’s exactly it. I need a basic truck to do basic truck stuff. I have a car to do car stuff.

You used to be able to buy a good basic truck from Toyota. Now you can hardly buy one from anyone. What used to be trucks are now basically weird, cramped cars with open trunks.

You can still get a pretty plain one. Look on the Toyota website at a access cab, utility package. The utility package is the fleet model now, doesn't have a painted bumpers or back seats. But only comes in automatic.

Thanks for the info. That at least keeps it under 30K.

I do wonder if I would be happy with the 2.7 running thru a slushbox. One of the many reasons I prefer a manual is the ability to use all the HP. My 97 seemed much peppier than my brother’s 2000 and the only difference between them was the transmission.

Well now the autos are 6 speeds instead of a 4 speed auto vs a 5 speed manual. Maybe the extra gear will help. Couldn't hurt to test drive one. I'm like you I'd rather have a plain truck I can drive for over 10 years without a bunch of stuff to break.

I have a 2.7 pre runner. I'm also a single cab. So it's a lighter truck. But I've got 27-28 before on the highway running 55 to 60. If you go over 65 it goes back to 20mpg in a hurry.

funny how they rate the 2.7 that.my mpg real world is summer time (23.8 combined. )(winter 20.5) my 2002 v6 was 18 summer 16 winter!! both access !! I haven't any idea what 3rd gen v6 real numbers are, but I'm going to assume like my 2002. !!my buddies Nissan v6 also 16 to 18 at best. the 2.7 will drop to 18 if I keep it above 80 for long stints.

I don’t put a lot of faith in the EPA fuel economy numbers. In my experience they always over rate the automatic transmissions and under rate the manuals.
